4 out of 5 stars Logitech Camera   August 2, 2008
The Logitech Quickcame orbit AF works great and is a great product overall. The only issue I have is when I restart my computer, I must manually tell it to follow me and reset mnay of my other settings.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining video show   August 2, 2008
I bought this camera as replacement for an older Logitech model, and I use it mainly for video calls via Skype. I selected the QuickCam Orbit AF because I wanted the best possible picture quality and I thought it was cool to place the camera at some distance from my computer and control its pointing direction by mouseclicks. This works as well as expected. Also the automatic face tracking works to some extent, but don't expect too much. The camera will not follow your face very smoothly, and it will sometimes decide to pan into a direction where it doesn't see any face or moving object anymore. If the auto zoom is on, it will then zoom out, try to find you again and zoom back in. From a technical point of view this behavior is clearly suboptimal, but it can actually add entertaining elements to a video chat. I like it! If you find all the automatic panning and zooming annoying, you can always switch to manual mode and control the camera by hand through the graphical user interface. The picture quality - focus, exposure, colors - has always been good on my own screen as well as on the other side, but I haven't tested it under low-light conditions so far. Also the built-in microphone has not been tested because I am using a headset. Anyway, I think this is a quite good camera with nice-to-have remote-control and auto-tracking features for an acceptable price. I recommend it to anyone who wants a little more than conventional video calls with stationary face close-ups.

3 out of 5 stars Way overkill for Skype   July 24, 2008

This is a high-end webcam in Logitech's lineup. The quality seems ok to me, although it is still made of plastic like every other webcam.

The big gimmick here is the motorized auto-tracking capability, which turns out to work quite poorly. It is not a problem of the facial recognition software. I can see it identifying my eyes and mouth correctly. Instead, the motor seems rather clumsy and inconsistent at following my movement. Logitech will do well by upgrading to better mechanical components.

The camera itself has a fairly high resolution. Unfortunately, none of the people I skype with has the bandwidth to receive HD images, so the feature is again wasted. Worse, the additional pixels need a lot of CPU horsepower to process, and the 1.6 GHz dual core in my machine is simply not up to the task. I have been waiting for the price on Q9450 to come down, but the camera may force my hand.

Considering the nearly $100 price, I cannot say this camera represents good value. Logitech is never cheap, but this one really comes close to being a rip-off. The built-in camera with my notebooks work just as well for Skype. Perhaps the QuickCam Orbit makes sense for people doing a lot of video-blogging, but for the rest of us, a built-in camera in the monitor actually takes up less space and costs significantly less too.

4 out of 5 stars Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF   July 18, 2008
Great WebCam. Be sure to check Logitech website to download updated drivers BEFORE loading the software drivers from the (included) CD.
Video, Audio performance 4-5 star. This, coupled with the usual expert ordering and delivery services of Amazon.com made this an enjoyable purchase.

2 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!   July 8, 2008

I bought this camera a week ago and I just contacted technical support about it. Althoug it does offer great visual quality, it does not follow you at a 360 degree angle. It follows you at a 180 degree MANUALLY. By itself, using the 'follow me/face tracking' automatic mode it takes a long time for it to follow you, sometimes does not follow you at all (without getting up of your chair) or if it does, it focuses your body, not your face, or it may get focused on your previous position and not move to your new one AT ALL. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. I'M ABOUT TO RETURN IT.
