Great for top of the stairs February 7, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We have a 3 year old and a 22 month old and live in a 2 story home. This gate is wonderful. We have it at the top and bottom of the stairs and there is no way either kid is going to defeat this gate any time soon. To open it you press a button down and in, and have to pull the opposite side of the gate out of the hinges and let it retract. It does make noise if you retract it with one hand, but the manufacturer suggests on other websites that this is an alarm for parents in case an older child should open the gate. It would be difficult for a child to retract this gate in silent mode.
We have had both gates for 1 year now and they are wonderful. The mesh is in good shape and they are secure to the walls. We like the fact that you can roll the gate back when not needed which is nice when you are trying to move large items up the stairs, and that they are virtually climb-proof. Our daughter is nearly 40" tall, our son is about 37" and they do not even attempt to climb this gate. I am 5'6 and can just comfortably step over the gate. (which they don't recommend)
While it is a little on the pricey side I feel it is worth the money to have this gate rather than a bulky metal gate. You never have to worry about it becoming unlatched and with a simple glance up the stairs you can see if it is "locked" or not.
We are buying another gate for our finished basement to keep the kids from playing on the steps. If I had it to do over again, I would have never bought a different model gate, I would have used this Lascal gate in every opening I use a kiddy gate now.
Great idea, needs revision February 6, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great idea; a child gate that rolls up and is easy to deploy and retract and mounts in a wide varity of openings. And, once installed, the gate does work very well and seems strudy.
However, the unit is NOT designed to be installed with a baseboard or corner round and if thoes are present you have to purchase a rather costly adaptor set which addresses the baseboard but not the corner round. For that you need to use a bit creative instalation and use parts from the kit to 'make it work'. For over $100 each I would expect a better designed unit.
That said, we do like these and if you are OK with the complex install or don't have the baseboard/corner round issues this is the only product of its type that I know of.
Good for narrow doorways January 30, 2007 I bought this to confine our puppy in our bathroom which had a doorway which was only 22 inches across. I looked all over the place and this was the only item which fit the bill. Set up was fine, and it worked well enough. It is a bit of a challenge to close it with one hand. And you must ensure that the screen tension is tight enough.
We've had it for almost a year now. And our puppy's teeth has grown that she actually was able to chew a rip up the screen. We're considering buying another for those times when we have to confine her and don't want it to be in a crate or behind a closed door.
Nice looking gate January 26, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is defintely the best looking gate around. We have it right by our front entrance and love how it disappears when we don't need it, and it even looks nice when it is out. It was very easy to install, but it's not as easy to use. There is no way my 9 month old is ever going to be able to climb this or get out, but it's difficult for me to open or close with her in my arms. It is also noisy if you open it one handed. For a location where you don't have room for a swing out gate, this is the best option.
