Freedom January 18, 2007 This product is great! It took a few minutes at first to program but since then, WOW. The design makes it stable so that my cats can't tip it over and it delivers food right on time. It has allowed my family to have long weekends and know that my cats are truly getting fed (which has not happened consistently with pet sitters). My smallest cat comes running when she hears it go off just to grab a few nibbles. She's Pavlov's cat! I highly recommend this product.
Visit your hardware store to keep the paws out January 18, 2007 There was doubt from their Dad upon reading the reviews that a cat could get his paw up and jiggle food out but it didn't take long for "The Paw" to figure it out. A visit to the hardware store supplied a metal piece from the hinge section (rounded edges and a few small holes) that I superglued to the front, vertically covering the top half of the chute space. The food comes out fine below the metal piece. That worked great until "The Paw" started banging the feeder around, which will also cause it to dispense food. Solved that problem by sandwiching the feeder in a corner with 2 10-lb weights on either side.
We set the clock time 12 hours off (switch AM and PM) to allow the mealtimes we want.
The programming isn't really that hard. I agree with other reviewers that it would be nice to have a dish that separated for cleaning (although the dry food residue wipes out fairly easily), to have smaller amounts available for cats, and to allow various amounts per feeding. If you pick 1/4 cup you can only have 1/4 cup at each mealtime.
The bowl size is large enough for our 2 cats to eat comfortably at the same time.
They quickly learned to wait for the feeder to feed them their morning and evening feedings.
Keeps the kitties happy January 17, 2007 I bought this item because my cats are not free fed. They decided they wanted to get fed at 6 am and I didn't agree on waking up that early. I bought the feeder to feed them at their prefered time and we are now all happy.
My gripe is that one of our cats had learned how to have a 24 hour kitty buffet by putting his paw up inside the dispenser to jiggle kibble free. Luckily he is not our obese cat, but I still worry that he could possibly get his paw stuck up inside. I wish there was a better safety measure to prevent this.
Also, the lid is not airtight, so I probably would not want to have this feeder in a humid climate where the food would become stale quick.
Needs some adaptations, but has been great for us January 16, 2007 We originally bought this feeder to put our minds at ease when we went off on vacation. One of our four cats quickly figured out how to reach a paw up and release a couple of pieces of food, so we rigged a craft stick barrier in the chute that allows the food to come down without allowing kitty paws up. I would think that this would be a fairly simple modification for the company to make, so it puzzles me that they haven't despite this common complaint from customers.
I also agree that the programming is difficult. I wish it had more than three time slots, and I wish you could have different amounts release at different times. Again, how difficult a modification to the timer mechanism can that be? We keep the manual handy just in case we forget how it works.
Despite these complaints, we now own three of these for our 4 cats, and we rely on them for every feeding. No more kitties pawing our faces to wake us up in the am, and no more worrying when we go away for the weekend.
Almost worthless... January 13, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The first one I bought wouldn't turn on at all, so I had to exchange it. All went well with the second one for about 6 months and then wheel that releases the food just stopped working. It's just not worth the $60 to know whether if you leave your cats for a few days if they're going to starve. I'll never purchase a product from this company again, and will be taking a driving hammer to the old one just for fun, circa Office Space.
