Thought this wouldn't stand up to my rather large cat but it does! September 5, 2008 Well, I wasn't sure that this product would be that great. I was afraid that it would start stinking and that my rather large cat with humongous poops would make this cat box seem like a pipe dream. I was wrong. I've now owned it for a month and have had no problems with smells and it works like a charm! Yes it can be a little loud when the rake does its thing but its not bad and when my cat hears the rake start working, he runs downstairs to watch it move.
And as a side note, at first I thought the cartridges were a little pricey but when I figured out how much I spent on kitty litter per month, I realized that the difference in price was about $10 per month. I'm more than willing to spend $10 a month to not have to clean the litter box every day. And the clean up once a month is a piece of cake and not the icky experience changing the litter out of a regular litter box. There's been times I just wanted to throw the old litter box away rather than clean it.
Can we say FABULOUS?! September 3, 2008 I have never owned a cat in my life-the main reason? The litter box. I didn't want my house to smell like an animal OR like litter (the scent is so strong!) I didn't want to have to buy tubs of litter, liners, etc. so this is a perfect solution for me. I still clean out the compartment every other day or so (I just like it to be extra clean) but what a great product?!
The write up sounded good but-- August 31, 2008 I bought this because I sprained my right wrist and was tired of scooping litter from a rectangular box. I have two cats and realized the litter tray would only last two weeks and could be expensive. I believed the litter crystals would elimate odor. Well, they didn't. When the scooper cycles and moves the soiled litter to its box on the end, the odor that comes out as it lifts up, scoops litter in and then closes down, will about knock you over. So much for odor free, and I'm trying to keep clean because my house is for sale. I didn't have as much lingering smell from the scoopable clay litter I was using. I found a round litter pan at Petco, and have gone back to the regular litter I was using. And my cats are happier. They didn't like the noise this product made raking back and forth. AH
Great!!! August 29, 2008 I like the Scoop Free Litter Box quite a bit. With 4 cats, however, only 2 of them like the box. My foster kittens use it as well, but as some of the reviews state, it's better to have more than one box when your cat household exceeds 2, as the disposal compartment can quickly fill up.
2 of my cats will not use the box, 1 because she's scared of the noise when it rakes up the mess (she's not as scared as she once was, but still won't use the box), and I'm unsure of the reasoning behind my other cat's decision.
The refill trays are expensive, but I found and purchased the Forever Litter Tray on ebay for $60, which is well worth it considering the Scoop Free refills are about $15 each.
I've not noticed any smell emitting from the box, nor has the box ever jammed.
The ONLY automatic scooper you'll ever want to buy August 28, 2008 Seeing as I only interact my own "business" as a matter of cleanliness, I'm not thrilled about playing with my cats'. I have tried numerous different automatic scoopers over the years, and this is the ONLY one that has lasted more than a couple weeks. Sure, you get all excited when you shell out 100+ bucks in the hopes of being free of this disgusting chore, but over time (and not much time at that) the other self scoopers break down. Most of them sounded like a car wreck in progress by the end of their tenure (more like ten-week). This one has not failed me yet! It's quiet, it's self contained, it's pretty. Your cats will be proud to poop in these. Sure, the cost of the refill cartridges is a bit high, but frankly, I'm willing to pay it as are thousands of others because it's SO worth it. As far the smell factor- I have yet to encounter ANY odor other than when it was time to change the cartridge. Get a whiff on ammonia? Change the cartridge! Seems pretty simple to me.
In the end- buy it, set it up, plug it in and WALK AWAY. Awesome. Just awesome.
