4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Crate   April 4, 2008
Because I wasn't sure how big my rescue mixed breed puppy was going to be ... he had already outgrown the crate I had at 16 weeks old and 41# ... and because he loved to sprawl on his back when he slept, I decided on the 48"L x 30"W x 33"H size. I selected the Midwest because of it's easy set up. The old crate I was using came in two parts and required flipping sides and hooking. It was a bit of a challenge and I could only imagine how difficult a larger crate of this type would be to set up, not to mention that it often came partially apart when I had to move it.

Because a large size crate was going to be a bit heavy I chose the Select model with three REMOVEable doors to help decrease the weight when moving it to a new location, and because three doors would make it easy to place the crate anywhere.

My puppy loves his crate and I do too. It does set up easily and the doors remove easily too, but they are a bit of a challenge to put back on. One must line up the three door hooks with three metal loops on the crate. The problem is that the hooks are all the same length so you must get all perfectly aligned before pushing them in and therein lies the challenge.

It would have been better if the hooks had been graduated in size with longest at the top and shortest at the bottom (or vice versa). Then one could partly insert the first hook, go to the second hook and line it up and partly insert (thereby bringing the first hook further in), and finally the last hook. Because of this fairly minor but sometimes frustrating issue, I cannot give the crate a perfect 5 stars, but I would not let the issue deter me from buying another one. After all, how often will one be removing and replacing doors?
