1 out of 5 stars Do you like to eat toxins?   February 16, 2008

All edible Kaytee products contain Ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is a preservative and pesticide that over time can damage your pet's liver. Since guinea pigs live on average 7 years, wouldn't it be better to feed a better pellet? Unfortunately those better pellets are not available in your local Pet Stupids since they refuse to carry them and give themselves and Kaytee competition, but they are available by mail order, and one is available at veterinarian's offices. I buy 10 lb. bags for about $17 and that includes shipping. My guinea pig prefers this pellet too - Sweet Meadow Farms.

For those of you still sitting in the dark pondering about Ethoxyquin - from Wikipedia:

"Ethoxyquin is a quinoline-based antioxidant used as a food preservative and a pesticide (under commercial names such as "Stop-Scald"). It is commonly used as a preservative in pet foods to prevent the rancidification of fats. There has been some speculation that ethoxyquin in pet foods might be responsible for certain health problems. To date, the US FDA has only found a verifiable connection between ethoxyquin and buildup of protoporphyrin IX in the liver, as well as elevations in liver-related enzymes in some animals. It has been shown to cause mortality in fish.

It is also commonly used in spices to prevent color loss due to oxidation of the natural carotenoid pigments."

But in this throw away society, who really cares about poisoning a guinea pig. After all, he's probably kept in a teeny cage too.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most, but not as good as Oxbow   January 9, 2008
As far as popular and commercially-available guinea pig pellets go, Kaytee Timothy Complete is one of the better choices, seeing as it doesn't have all those "extras" -- corn, seeds, colored crunchies that resemble dry cat food -- mixed in. (Stay away from the brands that have all the "extras" in the pellet mix, as they present a choking hazard and are nutritionally inadequate.)

My adult GPs liked the Kaytee Timothy Complete pellet perfectly fine; but then I started boycotting PetSmart and was forced to find pellets elsewhere. It's a good thing, too, because then I found the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellet. Oxbow is the best brand available due to nutrient content, freshness, digestibility, and far fewer preservatives. My piggies LOVE the Oxbow pellets and flat-out refuse to eat the Kaytee pellets now.

Go for the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine Timothy-based pellet (for adult GPs) or the Oxbow Cavy Performance Alfalfa-based pellet (for pups & pregnant females). They come in a red pouch, and you can get them for a very reasonable price if you shop around a little (try PetFoodDirect . com -- they frequently offer 15-20% off discounts). However, if you can't find Oxbow, this Kaytee Timothy Complete pellet is probably your next best bet, given your options.

Update: Thanks to Mud, above, for pointing out one of the many toxic preservatives in this pellet. Most people would be surprised to see how many toxins are used as preservatives in the vast majority of pet foods. Please have enough love for your guinea pigs to do some research and find them the best pellet available! Your vet will be able to provide some guidance.

5 out of 5 stars The best Guinea Pig Pellets   October 14, 2007
These are the only type of Guinea Pig pellets we ever buy. When we bought other brands our GP only eat them if there was nothing else to eat. These he loves.

5 out of 5 stars A good adult guinea pig feed   February 1, 2007

This is what I feed my guinea pig because the main ingredient is Timothy Grass Hay. This is particularly important to us, since there is a hay allergy in the house and our pig can't eat it fresh. I'm no vet, but everything I've read suggests this is the best staple ingredient - higher in fiber and more appropriate nutritional content for adult g.p.s than alfalfa hay. Also, it contains no seeds or other "add-ins" which can be a choking hazard.

Our guinea pig seems to enjoy this compared to the food she ate when she was younger. As I made the switch, I offered a bowl of each, and she went straight for this.

Finally, the bag is resealable to preserve the most nutrients and keep the food fresh.
