Product Description
As seen on TV! No more scooping! No more odors! This revolutionary appliance makes litter box clean-up fast and easy. The automatic, self-cleaning unit rakes away waste and leaves the litter box clean after each use. An infrared sensor starts automatic operation ten minutes after your cat leaves the litter box. The rake scoops waste and drops it into the disposable container, where it and odors are sealed away. When the receptacle is full, just throw it away and replace with a fresh one. Safety bar stops and reverses at the slightest touch. Extra deep litter tray for premium litter detaches for quick and easy cleaning. Bonus Paw Cleaning Ramp helps reduce litter tracking. The powerful Litter Maid Designer Series with its extra large litter tray is ideal for extra large cats and multiple cat households. Unit operates on low-voltage AC adapter (included) or eight D batteries (not included). Veterinarian recommended. The Litter Maid works only with clumping litter. Complete unit includes: Litter Maid Mega Designer Series Self-Cleaning Litter Box, 4 Disposable Waste Receptacles (additional Waste Receptacles sold separately), 4 Odor-Absorbing Carbon Filters, Bonus Paw Cleaning Ramp, Low-Voltage AC Adapter, Triple-Action Tool that helps you measure the level of the litter, assists in cleaning the rake, and aids in the removal of small waste particles, Cleaning Brush, Quick Start Guide and Care Book.

2 out of 5 stars Great but then.   October 2, 2006
I've owned several of the Littermaid units over the years. This is probably my last. Unfortunately, I've found them to breakdown. With the current design, the gear starts slipping with age - at least for my unit. Despite one email and three messages through Littermaid's website, they are not contacting me about the latest problem. It's been about three months now since I first wrote them. The rake will move a bit, get caught and apparently the gears start slipping making quite a racket. I have to keep giving it a shove to start it moving again. When it reaches the park position, the gears slip and it will just keep slipping until someone comes and turns it off - very bothersome in the middle of the night. When working correctly, the motor will reverse if it reaches park and runs into resistance, e.g. a mound of built up kitty litter, e.g. my cat seems to know exactly where to paw the litter while covering up her business. After a given number of tries, the unit will shutoff. However, if the gears are slipping, it won't reverse and won't shut off. I'm now having to run the unit once a day and be there to keep the rake moving. The current unit was replaced under warranty about ten months ago.

I've found that the waste receptacle can sometimes be slightly difficult to remove. It's front edge must slip under some tabs. With time, litter will build up on the floor around the pan.

The price is very reasonable for this unit and all you need to use is a good, clumping litter. Littermaid recommends several brands. The current design has a bag of carbon which fits into the lid to help control smells. The unit will only smell if the waste receptacle is overfilled and the lid sits open. Another automatic unit on Amazon appears to use a special, rather expensive "litter".

In general, I have liked using an automatic unit. For me, it's much better than scooping and keeps the cat pan clean. I would really like to give this unit more than two stars.

5 out of 5 stars Glad We Bought This!   July 17, 2006

I don't know how I went on so long without owning this litterbox. I love cats, but I hate cleaning the litter box. It's very simple to use and to throw away the disposable compartments. You don't smell when the cats have used it. I'm an owner of 3 cats and now 5 kittens. The only problem is it doesn't scoop kitten poo as easily since it's so small. But other than that, it's perfect. You might need patience with cats that are afraid of everything...I have one that is like that and he steps into the litter box very carefully. He's afraid of the litter box after he get's out since it scoops it once they've left the box...I love the litterbox!

5 out of 5 stars When these things dont break - they work great * I have a few cats!   July 13, 2006

I am on my third machine and my friends keep wondering why I keep buying these things ever though they break often. I buy them because when they are working properly, they work great. It's a life saver to me because I have four cats and leave town often. Also a good tip, don't buy the littermaid litter that goes with it, it does not work well nor does it leave the box smelling good. I use another brand of litter and it works fine. I use Purina multiple cat litter with it and it works just fine. Plus to get rid of any fleas flying over the box as it fills. I spray the inside of the plastic container with bug spray before I place it in the machine.

5 out of 5 stars Great product   June 25, 2006

I have had a littermaid in the past and was very happy with it. All of my cats were happy to use it and it wasn't very loud. I didn't even notice it after a few days.

I don't currently have a littermaid because Betsy doesn't cover up her poop. So the rakes would get all gunked up with it and the littermaid wouldn't work properly (and it was too gross to always have to clean the rakes and I wasn't willing or able to go cover up her poop for her).

I will be buying another littermaid when I all my cats cover their business. I can't wait!! Great product!!

5 out of 5 stars i hate cleaning the littler box   February 14, 2006

I love my cats and hate cleaning the litter. If you are like me you are the type to let it sit until it's really gross... Yes I admit it and I know there are others out there!
So, I read all of the reviews and finally bought one of these self-cleaners. It is wonderful. Yes, I have to empty the tray every 4-5 days or so (I have 2 cats), but that is no big deal cuz I know my cat's paws are much cleaner and I know they are happier.
As far as noise, sure you can hear it through the house (we live in a 1200 sq foot apt and it's in out bathroom) but after the 1st week it is not noticeable. The cats actually are spell bound by the mechanics and run over every time it does the sweep to watch and I guess try and figure out what's going on.

Yes, we line the trays with bags and it works great and saves $$$. We do use the carbon squares and they help a little. I really do not notice a difference w/ or w/o them. I will say the smell of litter has been reduced DRAMATICALLY.

So, if you hate litter buy this thing, it's worth it. By the way I do not do much maintenance on it (ie. sweep the tracks for the mechanics) I deep clean it every couple of months.
I've had it for 3 months.
