This item does well. I noticed that a previous reviewer had stated that she was surprised at the quality of this item. I did not see any others commenting about that and was truly hoping that maybe her item had been the odd ones that turn up now and again in processing. Well folks not the story mine appeared to have the same problem. It's not like this is a low cost freeby either. I was disappointed that I would have to repair this item before using. I have several Oster items that I have not had a problem with until this one. Once repaired the rake does a good job but if not repaired it could create a problem possibly scraping the dogs skin which could lead to other problems. I would not recommend this product unless it is repaired and worked properly.

The Oster rake was excellent at removing undergrowth and loose hair (Spring time shedding) from both my Golden mix and Boxer/chow mix. I expected it with the Golden but I was surprised at how much hair came out of the boxer/chow. I have recommended it to friends.
the last word in pet grooming April 18, 2008
I borrowed one of these from a friend and was amazed at how it stripped the undercoat out of my pets. I actually thought my cat looked like he had lost weight after grooming him with the oster rake. I have 2 long haired cats and a husky with significant undercoat. This tool works on all 3 animals. I work part time at a shelter and have seen every type of grooming tool in the market and none of them can touch the oster grooming rake.

I saw a Golden Retriever owner using this on her dog at the Chicago Dog Show. I bought one for my goldie & I can't believe how fantastic this thing is! She loves it and her coat is beautiful & I am positive this will reduce the shedding. Thank you Oster for a great product.

If you're looking for a product to reduce shedding, this is a great buy, especially for the cost. I have a golden retriever mix and he really enjoys the undercoat rake. It's very sturdy, made of metal, and very easy to use--a little intimidating when you first remove it from the package though. I wondered if it would scrape his skin too much, but it doesn't seem to scrape him at all. It does help reduce shedding, but as you already know as a pet owner, NOTHING will completely eliminate shedding!
