Happy I bought it! September 20, 2008 I'm so happy I bought this! It makes my standard poodle's nails short, smooth and rounded without the potential pain or bleeding caused by nail clippers. I haven't used it on my parrots yet but plan to soon.
The instructions aren't great but it's not hard to figure out. The assembly of the bits is like an electric screwdriver. You press the lock button lightly to hold the metal tube (where the bits go in) in place while you screw or unscrew the the thing that holds the bits in place.
You use the rougher bands for quick, heavy duty grinding, the finer bands for lighter duty (small breed dogs or cats, birds, etc.) and the grinding stone as a finishing tool to finely smooth the nail.
To change the bands, you just have to gently work the band off of the grinding drum and replace with the one you want. Be careful not to stretch the bands or they won't stay securely on the drum.
There's a dial to select the speed you want. Start at the very slowest it can go. Even though it won't really grind anything down, it'll get your animal used to the tool. The next day, go a little higher. Work in baby steps until you and your animal is comfortable with the nail grinder.
me August 14, 2008 Really like this product for taking the nails off my dogs. I had gotten to the point of not wanting to attempt trimming his nail with the clippers for fear of cutting the quick (did a couple of time). Now other than it tickling may dogs toes I can get it done effortlessly without pain and the blood from cutting to close. My dogs and I are all happy.

The retailer my order came from was very punctual & highly recommend them. The Oster dog nail grinder I don't know yet so far my dog is afraid of it & she hurt her paw chasing a squirrel so haven't forced her yet but I do like it & hope to use it often.
wouldn't recommend July 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's difficult to "start from the bottom" and work your way up (as the directions say to) without touching the dog's pads at all with the nail grinder. Also, it's nearly impossible to get the right angle to file the dewclaw. As stated previously, it takes a lot of patience. If you and your dog have got the time, I suppose you may have better luck than me. I'd rather pay $10 for the vet to trim my dog's nails than to hassle with this nail grinder again.
Oster Nail Grinder! July 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Oster Nail Grinder is my saving grace! I used to hate to clip my dog's nails because I was afraid that I would hit the quick and make him bleed. Now I can stop grinding as soon as I start to see the quick! Also, my dog used to scratch me with his sharp nails after I used clippers; now, with the Grinder, they are so smooth!
Cons: They do not have directions on how to use the Grinder. I had to look up directions on the internet from some random lady who made a website detailing how she used her grinder. It was frustrating at first because I had no clue what pieces to use first or at what speed. Also, the noise is NOT as quiet as a whisper. I'm not sure if it's just mine, but I found mine to be quite loud.
Overall, the pros of having and using the Nail Grinder outweigh the cons. I would definitely recommend the Grinder to anyone with dogs! Keeping their nails short and smooth is easy as pie!
Suggestions: If you have a large dog, wearing some sort of mask over your nose and mouth would help a lot! I have a Great Dane and his nails produce quite a lot of powder when I grind them. Also, introduce the product slowly to your dog. It's frustrating if they are afraid of the noise/feeling of the Grinder and want to get away from it. Use lots of treats! :)
