Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Keep your turtles habitat sparkling with Zoo Meds new Turtle Clean 501. Clean water is essential to the health of all aquatic and semi-aquatic turtle species, and the 501 traps suspended particulate waste, removes odor and chemicals with activated carbon, and breaks down organic toxins with a biological filtration section. The Turtle Clean 501 filter is also great for vivariums, box turtle pools, and aquariums up to 30 gallons.

5 out of 5 stars Little engine that could   August 13, 2008
Like many new turtles we came across ours by the children finding a baby one in the yard and then flashing big puppy eyes so I'd say yes. Now we have a turtle and then get an aquarium (used). It had an under gravel filter that I heard was bad for turtles so I ordered this online.

I did partial water changes until it got here. I plan to replace the parts suggested to get the ammonia out, but as far as cleaning poo and gunk out this filter kicks butt. Also, it will reach into a low level of water which I like. We have it going on a 75 gallon tank half filled. Certainly worth the price. I may even get a second one if I decide to add more water (but I like seeing the turtle).

3 out of 5 stars OK, not great   February 19, 2008
I've been running this filter for two weeks in a 20g tank with a small turtle. It is easy to set up, but I am not thrilled by how it keeps the water in the tank. There just isn't enough water flow, so you wind up having to dis-attach the upflow just to clean out the places in the tank where waste accumulates. I like it better than all the in tank options I've tried, though. It's a lot like a Rena XP3 (which I have on a bigger tank). I just wish it had a little more of its power.

1 out of 5 stars The Perfect filter if you only need it for a month   January 23, 2008

Bought this one to replace the 318 that wasn't quite cutting it and within a month all but two of the suction cups holders have broken and now the filter itself runs but doesn't pump the water in or out. The pump worked fine at first but about every 3 days it would just stop pumping and we'd have to resetup the whole thing which got very frustrating. I would not recommend this product or this company as the 318 which we were replacing also has stopped working. We bought the 318 in late September and the 501 late October and both stopped working by christmas. I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars not worth the money   October 2, 2007
I bought this filter after reading the mixed reviews, I side with the people that find it does not work well. I wish I could return it. I also agree with the using regular charcoal chips instead of buying the premade smooth bags, helps it work better but I am still changing water every few days due to odor and mess.

5 out of 5 stars Great little filter for small tanks   September 9, 2007

I purchased it for a 20 gallon turtle tank. It has two chambers. One with the carbon container and ceramic pieces and the other chamber contains a hard foam wheel.
The unit draws and returns clear water very nicely. As an experiment, I removed the foam wheel and filled the chamber with polyester filer fiber, the stuff you use in a regular filter. To my amazement, the unit now filters small particles 3-5 times better than the foam wheel did, so this is what I now use. The bag containing the carbon can be replaced with a nylon stocking filled with the carbon you buy at a pet store, no need to buy the OEM.

This filter works better if you have a normal rectangular aquarium, since it will need to be in the center of the tank for optimum filtration. It would not work as well in a long tank as there is not enough water current to move far away particles to the filer.

Overall, for the money, it's one teriffic filter, happy I got it.
With the addition of the filter fiber, it does the job even better.
I highly recommend this filter.
