5 out of 5 stars Acclimation is vital   March 14, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I'm a full-time positive reinforcement dog trainer and I successfully use the Gentle Leader with many of my clients. The key is to acclimate the dog to it over the course of several days, starting a few minutes at a time and slowly increasing the amount of time the dog wears it each day. During this acclimation period you also need to associate the wearing of it with good things - new toys, playing games with the dog, stuffed Kongs. Give the dog several days of slow acclimation before ever attaching a leash (because the leash adds weight to the collar causing the nose loop to tighten without your control).

It's best if you work with a trainer who knows how to best use the Gentle Leader in a calm and gentle manner. They are not hurtful or painful to the dog if the trainer knows what they're doing and can demonstrate it to you. I wrote my own acclimation process that I have my clients follow before I do the hands-on session with them.

This collar can help if your dog is pulling on leash, and also to help teach the dog not to jump, not to bark, for dog/dog aggression, counter-surfing, chasing bikes/cars/kids. Many of my clients have never been able to walk their dogs, sometimes for years, due to pulling or other behavioral issues on leash. With the acclimation process that I wrote combined with my teaching, my clients (dogs AND owners) learn how to make the collar a gentle and successful tool. One woman was so grateful that she was finally able to walk her 3 year old 120-lb. Lab that she sat down on the sidewalk and cried with joyful relief.

Great training tool!

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I didn't get this sooner   March 2, 2008
My dog was the worst walker I've ever seen. It was embarrassing to walk her. She pulled until she choked and threw up. At times, I really thought she was going to rip my arm out of the socket. My dog was out of control and completely unmanageable. I tried the body harness, which she pulled through and broke. I used the prong collar for years now. That has no effect on her pulling.

I purchased this product as a last resort, because I was skeptical. When I brought it home, my dog and I went on our first 2 mile walk together without ANY problems. You can see when they attempt to pull because it will pull their face to the side a little, but you don't feel it at all.

This product is not inhumane at all. The most inhumane thing was not having this product before. I avoided walking my dog and kept her inside all the time. I highly recommend this collar if you have a puller.

5 out of 5 stars Makes walking fun again!   February 12, 2008

I've had my 2 year old collie/chow mix for over a year. I dreaded walking him because he would pull the entire time, no matter if we walked for 5 minutes or an hour. I wasn't even able to walk him without gloves on. My boyfriend was able to, but it was a struggle for him too.

We bought the Gentle Leader and have used it twice. It took about 10 minutes for our dog to get used to the strap over his nose, but the second time we put it on him he didn't even resist. I can walk him now with only 2 fingers lightly looped through his leash strap. There is no struggling whatsoever on my part and he loves it because we go for more frequent, longer walks. Great product!

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped   October 18, 2007
At first my dog really disliked the Gentle Leader headcollar, but quickly adjusted. It worked well for the first few weeks, but as he's grown more accustomed to it he's started pulling. He doesn't pull as badly as he does with just a leash and regular collar or a halter, but still pulls quite a bit. I'm somewhat disappointed. I'd hoped the Gentle Leader would end the pulling!

5 out of 5 stars Very Scientific and Very Gentle...Check the Fit !   September 29, 2007

My dog trainer who is VERY knowledgeable about the latest research recommends the Gentle Leader. And after using it on my 5 mth old puppy, I can vouch that it works. And if fitted properly, it is NOT uncomfortable. I do agree that the other brands e.g. HALTI do not work...they have inferior design but the "Gentle" leader is just that...Gentle (if fitted properly !). As my trainer explained it, this is similar to what is used on horses. Can you imagine pulling a horse with a simple collar on? You would be dragged on the street! It is exactly the same concept. My puppy is so strong that an ordinary collar or even a choke collar simply did not work. This product is a miracle. Just don't buy an imitation and watch the video - getting it properly fitted is CRUCIAL to your dog's comfort !
