It is a real leash that is retractable. The other ones have only a cord, and it gets wrapped around the dogs legs and can hurt them. The cord can also be rough on the walkers hands. The leash made our walks much better. I recommend this product and give it 5 stars. HOWEVER, I would still only use this product in an uncrowded area. Too many people try to use these leashes around the city or around other people and have no control over their dogs..
