- Keeps the bowl at the right temperature at all times - Adjusts the amount of heat let off automatically depending on the rooms' temperature
Makes the betta happy March 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My betta fish's water was mostly in the 60-degree range, below a betta's ideal temperature (70-80F). As a result, the betta was very inactive. I bought this heater for a one-gallon bowl, and it increased the water temperature about 10 degrees. Now the betta is very active.
Even though the specs say it's designed for a 2-5 gallon tank, I'd still recommend it for a 1-gallon bowl. Just keep an eye on the ambient temperature because this heater does not have an automatic shutoff.
Keep the lid on March 6, 2008 Very safe and easy to use little heater. It's the only one I found that will work for 1-2 gallon tanks, and I too got it for my Beta. Comes with guide showing how much you can expect the water temperature to increase for a given volume. My tank's temperature went up 10-12 degrees. It's perfectly safe for the fish to touch, mine even huddled up behind it initially.
The only thing to realize is that water only heats up if there's a lid to enclose it. So if you have a Beta bowl, you won't notice a change unless you cover the opening. For me this meant I had to take out the original plants and get an aquatic plant to control the algae that soon grew in the absence of the other plants. But that will be true of any safe heater since water won't heat up gently unless water vapor is kept from escaping. You really don't want it to do more than that since there's no temperature control and you don't want your fish to overheat.
pleasant little heater February 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this little gadget to heat my Beta's bowl after he went into pseudo-hibernation. I was afraid a one-gal bowl would overheat so I got a 2-gal one for it. It started warming up immediately, and as all the other reviews state, it gets it about 5-10 degrees above room temperature. Since it doesn't have a thermostat, you really don't want it to do more than that for fear of overcooking your little friend.
My Beta LOVES it. It took him two and a half weeks to come out of his stupor, but he's eating again. It's harmless enough that he actually huddled up behind it, so it clearly doesn't bother him to touch it. He likes it a lot warmer than room temperature (he's really happy at 80 degrees!). SAM (the fish) and I are both very thankful.
Great mini heater February 18, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased the Hydor Mini 7.5W Heater for my .9 gallon tank with my betta. Note that the heater is spec'd for a 2-5 gallon tank. Before he had to deal with 70 degree temperatures, which is not ideal and borderline too cold. Since putting the heater under the gravel in the tank, the tank is now constantly between 75-80 degrees, which is the normal temperature for a betta. I highly recommend this product to keep your betta longer and keep him more comfortably.
