5 out of 5 stars Very Good Pet Containment   May 31, 2008

I received the Petsafe fence system yesterday and it took about 6 hours total to install for my yard. I didn't use any fancy machinery, just a flat shovel and some back-breaking hard work. I wanted to keep my dog within the backyard so I ran a single wire around the backyard, pinched it in on the sides and completed the loop by running wire near the front of the house. Setting up the actual system was quite easy. I just hung it on the wall near an outlet and split the wire as it came out my garage. The receiver on the collar looks a little big for my 55 pound dog (German Shorthaired Pointer), but I don't think he minds. Its also nice that the unit takes regular 9-Volt batteries as replacements. Today was the first training day with the system, and boy did the dog jump with his first shock. I felt really bad for him, but he quickly learned to associate the beeping and vibrating of the collar with the painful correction shock. By the end of the day he wouldn't go closer than 4 feet from a white flag - even for a treat or his favorite ball. Actually, at the end of the day I turned the system to beep/vibrate mode only since he is doing so well. I have more training to do and supervised outdoor time, but I can already tell that this product is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Big Dog, Big Area, No Problem.   May 29, 2008

We bought this for our 7 month old Newfoundland who likes to roam into the neighbors yards. We have about 1 1/4 acres but he seemed to like the neighbors areas better than ours.

Installation wasn't the easiest but we knew that going in since we were going to lay about 800' of wire. We did it all by hand utilizing a flat shovel to open a slot in the ground for the wire. Wire is buried 2-4 inches. Took about 12 hrs. for this part. Final connection to the transmitter was a breeze. All toll we had it up and running in 1 weekend.

We started out setting the collar to the lowest level, wanting to see if our 100# baby could feel it at all. Trust me he did. When we took him out the first time with the collar on he wanted to see what the new flags were in the yard. These are the flags you install where the wire is so the dogs get a sense of where they can and can't go. After that initial shock, he won't go within 6' of the flags. He's a quick learner. We have had it installed for 3 weeks now and while we are outside with him there is no problem with him staying in his own yard.

I've set the collar up to the medium level and actually tried holding the contacts and walking through the wire myself. While not painful, the shock is substantial. I'm sure this item would work for more agressive dogs.

All in all it is a quality item, easy to follow instructions and it does exactly what it is intended for.

4 out of 5 stars Zip Tie...Don't Weave!   May 20, 2008

Our lab/hound cross has been jumping our 4 ft fence so we decided to install this invisible fence along our existing fence line. I downloaded the manual online before I purchased this (highly recommended) to make certain this product would work with our yard configuration. The manual had several yard diagrams including one identical to our yard! I looked at a lot of invisible fences and this one has some great features that others do not (adjustable everything, 9V battery, plenty of wire, thorough manual). You can tell this is a higher quality system.

**A piece of advice** If you are running this wire along an existing chain link fence, the manual says that you can weave the wire through the chain link or zip-tie it. DO NOT attempt to weave this wire through the chain link if you have anything more than a 40x40 yard. We have .35 acres and by the time we laid out the wire per the instructions and then tried to weave 800 ft of wire through the chain link it was a total mess. It kept getting tangled and snagged. I ended up cutting it in three places to get it untangled. We switched to zip ties for the wire that ran along the top of the fence and that took about 1/10 of the time. Total install time: 8 hours but it should have only taken 4.

Started our training last night. Our poor dog is associating eating pieces of chicken off the grass with getting shocked. Will continue the training until she realizes it's the flags that she should be worried about...not the chicken.

5 out of 5 stars Quality and Price   May 11, 2008
We have had the system in the ground for about a month. So far so good. It took me about three hours to do 3/4 of an acre using an edger rented for that purpose. Total cost with an extra collar and renting was about $400.00 compared to the $1,600.00 we were quoted from invisible fence co. The training guide for the system was helpful for training as well. PS: Husky owners... if yours is like mine good luck! It's not that he doesn't feel it vibrate and beep...he ignores it. But he's got the hang of it now.

5 out of 5 stars excellent product   April 29, 2008

great product!

my wife and i installed it in a matter of ~4 hours or so. i had a small electric trencher that helped a bunch. if you don't have one, consider renting one.

only difficult thing was trying to get the wires to twist sufficiently so that the signal can be 'voided' in certain areas.

our 2 yr old lab learned very quickly (matter of days) where the boundary is. it's been in about a month - other than the first 2 days - she hasn't left the yard - even with some strong desires to run/chase something - she pull up well short of the audio signal even.

super easy!
