Defective product - not worth the price September 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received this product and the collar wouldn't charge. I contacted the manufacturer for a replacement but they are out of stock and won't be able to send a replacement for at least 14 days. This system cost more than others and I expected the quality would be higher. For the price, this is completely unacceptable. I would not recommend purchasing this item.
Even keeps our Sheltie from chasing cows!!! September 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been extremely happy with our Innotek system and what happened today sent me to the computer to write this review.
We live on a farm next to a county highway. We have a Sheltie and we were having a terrible time keeping him from chasing ours and our neighbors cows (not good)every chance he got to run out off his leash. He was also fond of chasing cars, motorcycles, bicycles (again, not good). I understand that this is what this breed does but it wasn't working for us to have a housedog that mucked around in the cowshed for hours chasing cattle, risking hurting someone on a bike, hurting the neighbors animals. Even before we installed the yard portion, we were able to get the dog to quit his non-stop barking in the house within about 2 days using the remote and the collar. We set up the system using something my husband rented at a hardware store (line layer??) This made it pretty quick to put the wire in. We went through all the steps with the flags, etc and he was fully trained within less than two weeks time. He quickly learned his boundries and was very happy running in the yard, but stayed away from the cows and cars. What happened today was that one of the cows go out of the pasture and was standing right in the yard. I thought "oh no...he's going to run through to get that cow back where she belongs!!!" But he didn't !! He chased her out of his "area" then stopped and kept barking from the edge.
When I purchased this unit I didn't really have much hope that a dog with such a strong instinct to herd could be "untrained". We are happy with it and Peanut is happy that he can run outside off his chain.
Easy To Use/Somewhat Inconsistent Performance May 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We recently purchased this product from Amazon. The instructions and training DVD were well put together and make it easy for anyone to install this invisible fence. Your two real options are to trench and bury the wire or to use yard staples to stable the wire to the ground. There's no doubt that trenching is the best method.
We installed and tested the product fairly quickly, and began training our German Shepherd puppy. Training is straight forward and you cannot underemphasize the importance of time and training. I found that the fence can be somewhat inconsistent at times, as our dog has learned the boundaries but occassionaly tests the boundaries and I do not hear an audible beep and there have been times where I question whether the dog gets a shock when she has gone over the fence line. I cannot yet trust her (after several months) with not going over the fence line, as she has done it on occassion without correction, and other times attempts to and does get the correction stimulation.
I do like the correction remote on the system, as our dog likes to jump. When she jumps I use the remote to provide stimulation, but she has learned that if she hears the tone she needs to get her act together before the collar "bites her". The only complaint with the remote is that you must either put it in your pocket (which allows for accidental correction to the dog when the button is pushed) or use the lanyard which isn't all that effective. I would like to see a remote with a clip in which I can clip to a pocket.
Overall a good system, but I need to get to the bottom of the inconsistent corrections from the fence.
Excellent Training Aid October 14, 2007 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
In a nutshell: Excellent product.
Details: I recently adopted a large dog who is very sweet, but also very headstrong. He had the habit of chasing and tackling people and would also to fail to obey when he had other ideas in mind. I worked with him using traditional training methods with success in several areas, but he continued to tackle small children and to get onto furniture and into our trash whenever we weren't watching. Also, despite our having a very good fence around our yard, he learned how to squeeze under the gate. When my husband and I had to chase him down our busy road, it terrified me into seeking a solution.
I asked friends and acquaintances who have large dogs, especially those with breeds known for stubbornness, for advice. Many mentioned training collars. The Innotek brand was specifically mentioned by two. I did some online research, and decided to purchase the Innotek Contain & Train.
This system has worked a miracle with my dog. The indoor zone keeps him off of furniture and out of the trash. The outdoor containment keeps him from going under our gate into traffic. The training remote (following the easy to understand instructional training video) allowed me to teach my dog to sit and stay on command. I initially had to reinforce the command with the correction, but he immediately associated the tone with the correction. After a couple of corrections, only the tone was needed to remind him to listen. Also, I would like to note I have only had to use the correction on the level "2" setting. (The collar has settings 0 - 9, with 0 being tone only and 9 the strongest correction). To make sure the device was humane; I tested the collar on my bare leg. The level 2 felt something like the weird tingling feeling you might experience if you touch an electric appliance with wet hands. It was not exactly pleasant, but far from painful. When he initially received a correction, my dog would perk up or twitch his ears and look around. Once he figured out obedience stopped the sensation, he would immediately obey with just the tone. I combined the training with verbal commands that he now follows without correction. To be honest I think my dog is now under the impression that I have supernatural powers!!
After working with the system, our dog has become a much better behaved pet. When our preschool nieces came to visit I was able to assure he would be under control. Friends and family who came to visit before we bought the system and have since returned have remarked that he is like an entirely different dog - a very well behaved one that they are able to enjoy being around.
This product has worked like a small miracle for me. I hope you will have the same success.
A step above the rest August 25, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
We started out with the other major brand of underground fence. It failed to work or contain our dogs. Within one week of use both of our large dogs were contained and safe with this system. The remote trainer has also been very handy for taking the dogs out and about. We had a small problem that required a new part covered by warranty and Innotek had it to us in 2 days. Great product and great customer service.
