Amazon.com Review Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 8-quart pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! And it's big enough for home canning, too. (The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry.) This professional-quality stainless steel pressure cooker is a handy addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools. The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains 75 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roasts--even desserts like Petite Pumpkin Custards! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture. Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this stainless steel pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 8-quart pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 10-1/2 inches in diameter (15-1/2 inches including handles) and 8-1/2 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

My new pressure cooker July 18, 2008 Seems this product is sold in two different versions of packaging, one with a red box and one with a blue box. The only difference I could tell between the two is the included manual/recipe book. The red box issue comes with a larger recipe book than the blue box version. I could not tell if there was a difference of construction between the two version...if there is one. They are both made in China. I have also noticed this product is also sold under the De Longhi name.
The construction and finish of the product upon delivery was flawless. The cooker has so far performed as expected. However, cleaning with a brillo pad left small scratches on the bottom of the cooker. This is strange because I have several stainless steel commercial cookware and they are able to sustain a good amount of brillo pad action. We'll see what happens as I continue to use this, but this is a bit concerning. My last concern is the rubber gasket, and if I will be able to purchase this part several years from now should I need one.
I wish this thing came with a pressure gauge, because during use it is difficult to judge the difference between a slow to medium steady stream of steam. At this price range, purchasing a stainless steel cooker at this size with a gauge is almost impossible. I hope that some day presto can come up with an enhanced attachment replacement for this unit. I have not tried canning yet.
Awesome June 28, 2008 This is an amazingly healthy way to cook.It is faster, easier, healthier and more flavorful way to cook. Out with the crockpot ( most have some lead in the stoneware), in with the pressure cooker. This model is so easy and safe. Perfect size for 2-4 people recipes.
Wonderful Product! June 18, 2008 The pressure cooker is great. I use it at least 3 or 4 times per week. It's so fast and cooks everything so tender and good. Last night, I cooked a 31/2 lb. pork sirloin roast and saurkraut and it only took 55 minutes. The 8 quart is a great size, even for only 2 people. I wouldn't go any smaller. Plus I like the stainless steel vs. the aluminum ones, because they don't discolor as bad inside. I've got more use out of this pressure cooker than any other appliance in the kitchen, except maybe the microwave. I have cooked fresh corn on the cob in mine and it only takes approx. 3 minutes. It turns out excellent. I steam carrots and broccoli and they only take a minute or two. So tasty and still have their beautiful color. I highly recomend this product to anyone who wants to save time in the kitchen and cook delicious meals, eat healthy and save energy. I almost forgot. For those of you that like to fix a good ole pot of beans, but don't have the time. The pressure cooker is the answer. If you soak the beans, pinto for instance, the night before, you can fix them right before supper in about 3-6 minutes, depending on how soft you like them. They are delicious!!! This pressure cooker would be the ideal appliance for the working Mom who has to fix good meals in a hurry.
Couldn't be more pleased May 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I recently had to retire the 8qt pressure cooker I had used for over 15 years, because the manufacturer is now defunct, and parts are no longer available. This was a great sadness to me. I ordered this Presto pressure cooker as a replacement. I am so pleased with it. The basic simplicity of this appliance makes it easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to maintain. I highly recommend this pressure cooker. It performs beautifully, I am amazed how little heat is required to maintain full pressure.
Some decriptions of this product say it is a "pressure cooker/canner". I think it is a stretch to call this a canner. Anyone who is serious about canning should invest in a true pressure canner. Go online or contact your local extension office for more information on how pressure cookers and pressure canners differ, and why cookers are not recommended for canning.
If you are new to pressure cooking, or if you want to expand your knowledge and skills, I recommend "Miss Vickie's Big Book of Pressure Cooking". It truly is everything you need to know, plus fantastic recipes. The book has no photos, but we all know what food looks like. While pictures might enhance the book's appeal, completeness of the recipe instructions makes them unnecessary.
Now, some praise for Amazon.com also. This was the best price around, and shipping was free. They shipped fast, and it arrived in perfect conditoin.
Great pressure cooker May 22, 2008 I'm very happy with this pressure cooker. It's no muss, no fuss. Does the job very well and is just the right size for someone who likes to cook ahead in bulk for the freezer.
