| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review A lighter weight vacuum cleaner doesn't mean a reduction in power with the Dirt Devil Featherlite series. This bagless upright delivers 12 amps of power (the maximum in home vacuums) and a generous 13-inch cleaning path. Easy to check at a glance, the bagless dirt-collection cup unhooks in a simple step. Once removed, it even stays covered until you're ready to dump it. The PermaFilter inside the cup#151;-which is removable for cleaning-#151;provides HEPA-like filtration and traps 99.97 percent of the dust and allergens run through the machine. Built to handle larger debris, this vacuum also features Dirt Devil's MotorGuard system, which sends air and dirt past the motor and fan and traps them in the dirt container. The patented swivel casters make the machine easy to maneuver, while the bumper helps protect furniture from scratches. Onboard attachments include a hose, an extension wand, a crevice tool, and a dusting/upholstery attachment. Other welcome extras are automatic height adjustment, a lift-and-carry helper handle, a bright headlight, a foot-controlled power switch, and quick-release power-cord storage hooks. i--Emily Bedard/i

I felt compelled to write this review today, because I am here looking for a vacuum to buy to replace this one.br /br /I have had this dirt devil for about 1.5 yrs and all ready it is not working properly. I have been all around disappointed with the vacuum.br /br /First of all it does lose suction quickly. It has a large canister to collect all of the dirt, however once it is about 1/4 or less filled, it stops spinning around and sucking up dirt. You can actually see the big ball of dirt/dust just stuck between the filter and the side wall of the cannister. So then you have to go empty out the cannister.br /br /Which leads me to the next drawback of this vacuum. Emptying the cannister is rather messy. You take the top off the cannister and then tip it upside down to pour the dirt out. The filter is inside the cannister and it will fall out, so I actually remove the filter, dump the dirt and place the filter back in. The filter is impossible to keep clean and gets dirty immediately. It is very expensive to replace - over 3/4 the price of what I paid for the vacuum. Since emptying the cannister is a messy process, I actually go out to the garage and empty it in the trash out there.br /br /ok - so here is the scene using this vacuum - vacuum for a few minutes - watch it stop spinning because big ball of dirt, go out to the garage, empty the cannister (messy), go back in, repeat process.br /br /Other aspects about the vacuum were fine for me (tools, weight etc).br /br /I am now looking for a vacuum that has a better method to empty the cannister, has more suction and will actually continue to pick up dirt once there is dirt in the cannister, and one that will last longer - or has a longer warranty...
Bad Design, Decent Suction, Horrible Filter and Canister December 12, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this from a local store mostly based on the price and watched it clean up some dirt. It was easy to assemble and took very little effort to put together.br /br /In the past we used a Dyson so I may be biased on my oppinion of it's cleaning properties compared to the Dyson. We have a golden retriver that constantly sheds and minor messes from him spilling something. One day his tail knocked over some coco powder on the carpet and brought out the Dirt Devil for its first action. br /br /After a few passes it collected it all no problems. However the HEPA filter got clogged and after EVERY use after there is the awful almost peanut butter smell coming from it. br /br /Know when you empty the container be very careful or the HEPA filter and base will fall out. I learned this the hard way when I went to empty in our apartment's trash chute and down goes the filter and the sucked up contents with a lovely 4 story drop. br /br /The hose attatchment is a joke. Constantly loses suction with it and the dial knob to change from floor to wand can be iffy. If you get hair/dirt in bizaare places and use the wand be careful, numerous times it jammed on me. br /br /The suction is adequate for the price. However, compared to my DC 07 Dyson it looks like a child push vacuum that pops up balls. br /br /My recomendation is if you have a spare room or guest house, you should get this vac for use in it. This way it is used sometimes and stops you from lugging out a vacuum cleaner from the otherside of the house. br /br /If you want the best, you have to pay for the best. This is adequate at most for cleaning, and the design is awful. The canister it comes with really shouldn't make it "bagless" you have to turn it upside down to empty it and gets dust on your hands and some dust always escapes onto the floor. I normally opened a trash bag, stuck the whole canister in, popped the top, and dumped. br /br /Again, decent for the price. But my personal oppinion is stay away
Great for price October 20, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I got this vaccum at Best Buy for $50. It sucks dirt out of carpet you never knew was there. I had a hoover that was so old it had a shag setting. Well that one bit the dust so I bought this soley based on the price. WONDERFUL!!!! When we moved to our new apt. the carpet was brand new but it was amazing what this thing sucked out of it. There was evidently a powder on the carpeting that you couldn't see with your naked eye. The canister was filled with the stuff. It's also amazing how much dust you get out of the carpeting too. In our old apartment I couldn't keep up with the dust and now in our new place I only have to dust once every two weeks. I swear this sucks the dust out of the air. It also has 3 different pile settings and a bare floor setting for a variety of surfaces. I use the setting that is 2nd from the highest because it gives the best results. My only complaints would be the filer has to be cleaned very good on a weekly basis and it does get very dusty when you go to empty it. Also where the cord attaches to the vaccum is poorly placed because it will pop the hose out of its storage space and it will become an annoyance during vaccuming.br /br /Over all this is a great vaccum for the price.
Great Bagless Vacuum! July 21, 2004 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I recently received this vacuum as a wedding gift. I have never owned a bagless vacuum before but this one is great! It's actually replacing another Dirt Devil that I've owned for years (it still worked great). I have a dog and a long-haired cat, I was amazed at all the hair this was able to get out of my carpet. The attachment also works wonders on my furniture. Here's a trick for cleaning the filter-put it inside a plastic bag and tap it against something...this keeps the dust from getting everywhere. Great product...highly recommeded!
good buy June 22, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My first bagless vac. I haven't had trouble with anything on this and I've had it for over a year! The only down side is empting the container. It gets very dusty which makes for another mess. I agree that empting outside is the best bet. I also have to vacuum the filter to get all of the dirt out. Overall, for the price of this product, it was worth it.
