Product Description Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker are on-call pediatric nurses and mothers. While answering parents' questions, they realized new parents lack the basic information needed to care for their infants. Moms and dads no longer have the advantage of grandma living next door to share her years of wisdom. They're on their own--and they need help. This simple guide addresses real-life, basic infant care needs for new moms and dads. Topics range from feedings and bedtime routines to common medical questions. The included instructional DVD gives parents visual step-by-step demonstrations of how to care for a newborn to six-month-old.

Love this book and Moms on call! October 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I originally heard about Laura Hunter and this book from a friend who had a baby two weeks before mine. After hearing their rave reviews, I decided to check it out. Laura and this book gave me my sanity back. As a new mother, I was overwhelmed with all of the literature out there and each one saying something slightly different. The Moms On Call Guide made sense to me, was simple and direct, and better yet, it worked! It worked so successfully that I used the same techniques with my second child and he started sleeping consistently through the night (10pm-6am) by 6 weeks just like my first child. I think some of the negative reviews exaggerated or misinterpreted the book, as I did not have to let my children cry it out or be miserable to sleep through the night. They simply were full, swaddled, and happy. (And by the way, I did breastfeed both my children and never felt like I was instructed not to feed my children when they were hungry.) The book presents tips and suggested routines. We as parents also have to use our judgement and what feels right when taking care of our children. No book can have all of the answers to every situation and for Pete's sake, if you have a medical issue, call your Pediatrician. I still refer to the book constantly and buy it for all of my friends having children. I also personally love the free email newsletters you can sign up for at [...]. I find them interesting and always end up forwarding them to other friends.
Simplistic and only very barely helpful October 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was a big fan of this book, having been impressed with the authors on several radio programs. That is, until I actually had my baby. The information is somewhat helpful (particularly the medical guidelines), but much is so generic it fails to answer the questions you have when they really come up. The section on sleep and napping timetables is especially misleading. Try "The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program" by Polly Moore PhD for more specific, scientifically-based information on babies' sleep needs and cycles (this book substantiates what all of the scheduling advocates are getting at but not quite understanding). We did appreciate the information on swaddling and use of a bedtime routine, but these ideas are not unique to these authors. I'm disappointed to say, this book is really too simplistic for most real day-to-day parenting challenges.
Moms On Call is Amazing July 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Of course you can survive having a newborn without a baby nurse, but why would you do that when you have their book right here for a really good price? Nurse Laura came to visit us when our daughter was 2 weeks old. I have picked up the book every single day since then and that was 5 months and 3 weeks ago. They do not advocate crying it out in the way that you might have heard about, nor do they advocate skipping feedings, as previous posters have mentioned. Instead, they give parents a suggested timeline and schedule, along with tips on everything from feeding to doctors appointments to common illnesses, etc. At last count, about 12 friends and acquaintences have used the Moms On Call method, and every single one of the babies of those 12 parents are healthy, happy, well-adjusted and sleep well. And, my pediatrician strongly agreed with the schedule and their methods. I highly recommend this book and going to the Moms on Call website.
non bias opinion both good and bad points to the book July 13, 2008 The good: I bought the book because it is condensed and included the dvd for swaddling. The points on the nighttime routine are great. It gives you facts without bogging you down with fluff- unlike the w.t.e.w.y.e. book. I will defend the cry it out method. They are not cold about it. There are times when you exclusively demand feed, but also a way to encourage a good sleep pattern. That way your husband, other children, and yourself don't feel "abandonment." People say it leads to abandonment issues. I don't think so. Each child has a predisposition as to how attached they want to be to their mother. I know both- bottle and breast fed alike. Each child is different. Also, they have you all during the day and are reassured then. If you don't set a routine for them now, they will set one, and it will be hard to adjust them later. For ex. a friend is getting ready to have her 2nd. Her first, age nearly 2, sets the rules. She requires only mommy to put her to sleep and the "routine" to getting her asleep is at least an hour. That is not only at night but for her naps as well. Because the parents did not set a routine and stick with it, the child is in control. Imagine what it will be like when number 2 is here. The first will then feel the "abandonment" when mommy has to take care of number 2.br /On the flip side, the book was not as informative as I would have liked. It is condensed with the meat and potatoes, but I have found other books that have filled me in on the vegetables. For example, the breast feeding section explains a few things, but does not go into detail on them. I want detail just not fluff. It does not have a good troubleshooting section or a lot of good tips for issues. Don't get me wrong, there are a few, just not a lot. So, I have another book exclusively on breastfeeding. Sometimes the information can be confusing. For example, there is a section in there about vomiting. Part of it says to supply baby with a few oz of water at specific times until no more vomiting occurs and then return to normal feedings, but the next page it is like we are to give quick feedings of foremilk more often until baby doesn't vomit and then return to a normal feeding. I am not sure which to follow. Is one for older and one for younger babies? Also, the swadelling says from 2 wks to 3-4mo. What am I to do prior to week 2? It doesn't say. Also, they have the swaddling technique on youtube. I will say it is a great technique. That is the only thing useful on the dvd. The blanket they talk about is expensive. If you can sew or know someone who will donate 15 min. to adding an edge to flannel you can buy at the store, then you will save about 30 dollars.br /This is all I have. I hope it informs you.
Best Baby Book to Have!!! July 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wish I had this book when my boys were infants. It has everything you really, truly need to know or know how to do when you bring your babies home. It even has a DVD to show you how to do things like swaddle your baby! A must have!!!
