Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing -- a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But even though it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29" to 34" wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44" wide. The pressure-mounted design won't damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

Amazon.com Product Description
Because of its simple "knee-knocker" mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it's secure again.

foot pedal
The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open.
The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate's vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side.

pressure mount
Adjustable pressure mounts don't require screws and won't mark up your walls.
Able to fit in standard doorframes (29" to 34" wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what we needed!   July 22, 2008
We recently brought home a new puppy, and I wanted a gate that would be easy for my 5 year old to use to get into and out of her toy room, but keep the puppy safe from her toys. This gate has worked perfectly! My daughter can use it easily, and does, frequently, when she needs a break from the puppy. The puppy stays out and her toys don't get chewed, or swallowed causing huge vet bills. It is awesome because of the vertical bars, even when our dog gets older, it will be near impossible (only the future will tell) for her to get over it.

We have since moved the gate from her toy room, to the hallway that leads to both her bedroom and toy room. now all her things are safe from puppy teeth.

I find it easy to use to pass thru with laundry and whatever else. Once our newest baby gets here in November, it will definitely be even more appreciated!

It installed easy, my husband just used a level to ensure the gate was level vertically as we were tightening down the tension screws. Easy as pie! We have had it for about 3 weeks now. No complaint. An awesome product.

5 out of 5 stars baby gate   July 7, 2008
This is a terrific gate that is unobtrusive and easy to use. I would recommend this to anyone with children or pets.

5 out of 5 stars Does the Job   July 2, 2008

We've used cheap collapsable barriers before, and they are fiddly and after time, damage the wall. We would put them on when the kids were crawling about. But now we have a new baby and the older kids can't hurdle the old barrier like we can, so we had to get one with a door. I like the fact that we aren't popping it on and off like the old one and it will just stay in place for the duration.
The older kids (twins) are 3 and a half and the lightest one (girl) weighs about 36 pounds. She can open it (with a little difficulty) by bouncing on the release, which is a relief to us since we didn't want to be lifting her over all the time. So it works well for keeping baby in, and letting little kids through.

5 out of 5 stars really hands free!   June 30, 2008
We love this gate, it is so easy to install. I just got rid of our superyard gate. That was not very good to use because you have to climb in and out of the gate. If you have an active child like mine, you will have to go in and out a lot. Several times i trip over it and it's not fun when you bang your legs into the gate. It is plastic but still it hurts! Since we just change to this hands free gate, we are so relieved. It's worth every penny!

2 out of 5 stars Careful!!! It's a HAND PINCHER!!!!   June 29, 2008
We love that this gate is hands free as it is in a frequently used passage to the laundry room, kitchen, garage, and bathroom. We use it with two extensions in a hallway to keep our young dog from visiting all parts of the house. I was excited that I could adjust it so that both my tiny 5 year old daughter and beefy 2 year old son could get through the gate. Unfortunately, when they stand on the foot pedal, they often put their hand on the top for support, right on top of the release mechanism. When they release off the pedal, their skin is captured and they have gotten several terrible blood blisters. It is a painful learning process!

On the plus side, once installed, it is fairly secure. If used in a wooden door frame, I would expect there would never be a need to readjust. As we use it against somewhat flexible walls, it does wiggle loose eventually and require remounting. In addition, the bottom pressure mounts do not work against shoe moulding- we had to cut a couple of angled blocks and used non-slip rug pad to hold them in place. When it starts to become misaligned, it is difficult to close and open, which is frustrating.

In all, for the price, (we had to buy two extensions) I am not happy. Between kissing hurt fingers and readjusting (which requires either the plastic wrench it came with or a real one) this gate is a constant reminder of the need for a better solution. Hopefully the pup will be trustworthy soon.

p.s. If using it for a dog retainer, a small dog (under 10 lbs) can slip through the side bars. We had to add a clear piece of vinyl on each side (sold to childproof banisters) to keep her in when she was little.
