can't get a prime July 21, 2008 The directions seemed simple enough. Everything went smoothly until it was time to plug the unit in. That's when the trouble started. I've been trying to get a prime for 3 hours now. I've tried everything and nothing is working. I'm extremely frustrated and definitely regret buying this filter.
Great Filter! July 8, 2008 Canister Filter Rena Filstar xP3 for Freshwater and Saltwater AquariumsThis filter replaced an Eheim 2213 canister filter on my 33 gallon tank. I previously had tetras and the Eheim did a fine job, but I recently gave away the tetras and switched to a few (very few and small) goldfish and the Eheim could not keep the water clean. Initially after receiving the XP3, I did not follow the instructions correctly in regards to priming and I had an awful time trying to figure out what was wrong but after a call to the manufacturer, I was up and running. The problem: you must prime BEFORE closing the locking catch where the tubes connect to the filter and then allow two minutes for the canister to fill completely. The XP3 has many different compartments for media, although is does NOT come with ceramic rings or filstars, which I purchased separately and used the rings from my Eheim. After one day of running, the water is cleaner than I ever remember with my Eheim. The Eheim was completely silent and the XP3 is a little louder but it moves probably 4 times as much water and the fish seem to love the current. The unit also comes with the option of using a spray arm or power nozzle. I am very happy with my purchase and believe it deserves more recognition.
Oscar thing June 25, 2008 The Rena Filstar XP3 is fantastic. My Fluval 404 died after four years and this is a perfect replacement. Made a mild, warm soapy solution for the hoses and connecters...........easily got the recommended two inch depth.
Don't buy Company won't back it up. April 29, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Product damages floors and carpet. Leaks. Mars the company that makes this bad filter does not back up product. Look at a different filter. Trust me.
Good value but a big design flaw January 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The XP3 is a very good canister filter.
The good? 3 decent sized trays, "priming" intake tube, configurable outflow tubes, all-you-need-in-a-box package (with exception of biomedia).
The bad? The quick disconnect is not heavy duty and can be distorted by any tension on one of the tubes (especially the output)--resulting in a leak because the O-rings do not seat. Also, the o-ring are not a "tight" fit and cannot handle much pressure. If you have any inline accessories that constitute a significant load (ie. uv sterilizers, CO2 reactors, etc), water will leak past the disconnect o-rings and onto your floor after flooding the top unit on the inside! Worst of all, this happens after about an hour or so and is not readily apparent!
Bottom line: I would much rather NOT have the convenience of the quick disconnect and instead have some external ball valves. My XP3 leaked on my the first time I used it. I searched online and this is a common problem.
