Love This! October 8, 2008 I love this product. There have been so many reviews, I don't know what I can add. But I have noticed no odors. I was a little disappointed when I read that the product wasn't recommended for humid areas, such as a bathroom. But I haven't noticed a problem, even though I have it in the bathroom. As for odors mentioned by the owner of 2 13 pound cats....Look, a 13 pound cat is going to have greater output, and it's going to take longer to dry out. I think the drying out of the poop is key to odor control. And some cats just have stinkier poop! Maybe a change in food might help. This does have a much larger footprint than a normal litterbox, but well worth it. Oh, a bonus is that it looks very attractive with the blue litter and the purple accent. Sooo much better than other litter boxes!
Not for every cat October 7, 2008 For whatever reason my cat didn't take to this litter box at all. She was a little freaked out by the noise it makes, but then I think her biggest aversion was to the crystal itself. When the box failed, I thought I'd just put the crystal litter in her old box and maybe after she got used to it, I could then transition her to the automatic box. I even went as far as "covering" the crystal litter with her old brand-The Freshstep Scoopable. She just plainly refused to use it and instead urinated on the floor.
This is very puzzling to me because my cat had never been finicky when it comes to cat litter. I had changed brands on her a couple times before and each time she jumped right into it.
If you're unsure about whether your cat would like this box or not, I suggest you purchase a bag of the crystal litter and see if your cat will use it. If not, it's very likely that this box won't work. I ended up having to return it along with the six-pack litter tray I bought and hurting my back while loading the 60lbs+ package to my car. :(
Disappointed October 7, 2008 I'm very disappointed with this product. I've had the box for five months. Two cats. One of my cats will go on the carpet if the litter tray is more than five or six days old. In the 5 months I've had this, I have averaged one litter tray every 12 days. That's VERY expensive. The odor is worse than my previous automatic box (from another company). I tried using clumping sand litter but it doesn't keep clean because the rake only moves horizontally, so the clumps stick to the rake and don't drop in the receptacle area.
The only thing good about this unit is that it's easy to change litter.
I would not recommend this unit to anyone except if you are physically unable or unwilling to ocassionally clean the litter tray in other units.
Love ScoopFree September 22, 2008 I spent quite a bit of time reading reviews for several automatic litter boxes before I settled on the ScoopFree model (with the cover). I've been using it for about 2 1/2 months now, and I love it. No scooping,no constant cleaning of tracked in litter all over the floor! I have it out on my patio deck (even though the instructions say indoor use only)and it has worked like a dream. I followed the advice in the instructions and placed the box near my cat's old box, which I refrained from cleaning. However, she kept using the dirty old bax and after a few days I couldn't take it anymore. I took away the old box leaving a bit of the used litter in the ScoopFree box. She took to the new box immediately and has been using it ever since. I thought she might be afraid of the noise and motion of the rake, but she is more curious that scared. In fact after she does her business she waits around for the 20 minutes it takes to activate, so she can see it move. I have found that after about 3 1/2 weeks the litter gets rather pungent, and the smell remains on my cat's paws. I've begun to experiment with scooping out some of the litter and replacing it with another brand of crystal litter to see if I can extend the amount of time between cartridge replacements. Some of the reviews I read said their cats would not use the crystal litter. I started mixing my cat's clumping litter with crystal litter about a week or so before I introduced the ScoopFree box. As I scooped her old box daily I'd remove some of the clumping litter and add the crystals. By the time she got to the new litter box she was fine with the crystals. My cat is only 2 years old and very good about using a litter box, so my success with ScoopFree may be because she is an easy, non-fussy cat. I am a bit concerned about what to do when the rainy season comes, as I will either have to move it indoors or go back to the old box on the patio. However, as for right now ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box is like a dream come true.
Its a Miracle! September 18, 2008 This is the best invention I have ever owned. I no longer clean my litter boxes every two days and my home does not smell like kitties anymore.....I have three cats and use two of these. My only regret is that I did not purchase them sooner!
