Great product May 13, 2008 I love this product. My cats took to it right away. All I had to do was leave the nasty dirty box around for a few days. It took no time for my two cats to choose the clean, fresh box. I will say I was a little concerned when I saw one of my cats staring into the box while it was raking a mess away, but it has not deterred him. I love the easy clean up, and the cost of the cartridges is little more than what I spent before on bulk litter. A few more dollars a month for a fresh, non-smelly, easy to manage litter box is well worth it!!
Wonderfully engineered litterbox May 9, 2008 I've been using a self-cleaning litter box for more then 10 years, which has been the original Littermaid. I tried the new Littermaid Elite and was very disappointed. While I had my original Littermaid I also tried the Petmate Purrforma and was disappointed in it as well, though not as much as the Elite. So, while I have the Elite white elephant, I decided to try the Scoop Free, especially since they have a 90 guarentee and will pay for return shipping (look at their website).
Well, I've very pleased. Right after I got it, I decided to see how much the motor can take, so I forced a cleaning cycle and I put my hand on the rake and tried to stop it. Compared to the Littermaid, overfilling should never be a problem. Though the crystal litter works different then clumping, the rake design is to try and lift solid matter is something the other litterboxes really needs, as it tends to not push as much litter as the clumping litter.
I don't know how long I can get the cardboard boxes from Scoop Free to last, but if you take the precauion of ensuring the seams are sealed with either a glue or silicon, this seems to overcome some reviewer problems with the box starting to leak. I know the litter container that came with my new unit had a bubble in the top carboard layer right at the seam. Even with the fast absorbancy of the cyrstal litter, having a bubble in the seam is a sure way to allow urine to get behind the coated layer of cardboard and start to leak. I have also trimmed my cats nails, so she is not scratching though the carboard either. Since glue and silicon is relative cheap, I really don't see this as a detraction. Using the cartrige box for several months and buying the crystal litter as needed, I don't see this costing more then clumping litter.
The only thing I've observed is the catch area for the solid matter does not seal as well as Littermaid or the Petmate catch area containers. I'm still considering how to address this. Maybe all it needs is a little baking soda.
Of the four different litter boxes I've used, this is currently the best one I've had so far.
not so happy with this product May 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
At first when I just received the scoop free I was very excited to put it to use. It was very easy to set up and very clean looking as well but I realized that the only litter you can use with this, is the blue crystal litter. This was fine with me, but my cats hated the new transition to this litter. At first they would not go near it but once they gave it a test try the rake went off and it freaked them out so much for some reason that they never wanted to go near it. Later on that same day I saw one of my cats licking his paw and his nails or claws where filled with blood on both front hands. The way the machine works is that if an object is in front of the lazer in the middle of the machine then it will not rake the litter unless the object moves out of its way for some time. However there is only one lazer in the middle and supposedly my cat was standing in their for a little while or maybe even jumped in while it was raking and when it rakes it does not stop and it ran over his front paws. I would not recommend this litter box but I am sure people have different experiences with it.
Scoop Free = Happy Kitty May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My little guy is very particular about the cleanliness of his box. If we don't keep it clean as a whistle, he'll let you know that he's not happy with you by leaving lovely little presents by the door. Soon, kitty had marked the front hallway so much that he actually PREFERRED to go number one there no matter how clean his box was.
Not a great situation by any means. I realized that, try as we might, it wasn't humanly possible to keep the litter box as clean as kitty wanted so some sort of mechanical box would be required. First I thought of buying a Littermaid, but I read such horrible reviews about it that I didn't care to try it for myself.
Based on the reviews I read, the biggest problem with most self-cleaning cat boxes is that the rakes just aren't powerful enough to dig out all of the big, heavy clumps. This isn't really an issue with the Scoop Free because of the crystal litter (which doesn't clump.) Instead, the Scoop Free sweeps away the solid waste into a covered compartment, where it begins to dehydrate and shrink. On the way back to its starting position, the metal rake evens out the crystals so kitty has a smooth surface for his inevitable return. Sometimes there's a stray piece of poop stuck to the rake, but that's pretty much the only problem we have had with this machine.
I really can't say enough good things about this machine. The odor control is amazing because the poop is kept covered. Also, I have found that crystal litter works best for absorbing yucky smells. The only reason we weren't using crystals in kitty's old litterbox was that the clumping litter was so much more convenient for cleaning with a traditional scooper.
Kitty took to his new box right away. We mixed a little bit of his old litter with the crystals so he would feel more comfortable with the new smells. When we caught him using the Scoop Free a few hours later, we gave him lots of praise and treats. We had to do some extra things to break kitty's habbit of peeing by the door (lots of enzyme cleaner and a new plastic runner over the carpet) but now kitty is doing all of his business in his super-clean Scoop Free and we're all getting along much better.
However, I'm not going to give this product five stars because of the disposable cartridges that it uses. You can't see this from the product pics, but the Scoop Free doesn't actually have a bottom. Basically, your cat is going potty in a laminated cardboard box with a little compartment at one end for his waste. You really can't beat the convenience of never having to deal with poop (just lift away the Scoop Free, cover the entire disposable cartridge with the included lid, and toss in the garbage) but I find the price of these cartridges to be a bit exorbitant and it can be very hard to find them in stores. Not to mention that it's not very friendly to the environment. I had also heard that some people had problems with their cats clawing through the bottom of the cartridge, however I didn't encounter that problem.
If you're going to get a Scoop Free (and I heartily endorse it) be sure to get a Forever Tray (what I bought) or a Permascoop from eBay. They are exactly the same as the disposable cartridges, just made out of plastic. You will save LOTS of money in the long run (currently, the best price you'll get is a pack of 6 cartridges for $100 here on Amazon) but the up-front cost is about $60. Also, having a permanent box means that you'll occasionally have to scoop out the poop from the covered compartment--I usually do it once every two weeks or so. And you'll need to empty out the box and clean it out a bit when the crystals need to be changed. I do this about once a month.
While we're big fans of Scoop Free in my house, you should definitely get a Forever Tray to go along with it.
No crazy cat lady smell May 5, 2008 I live in a one bedroom apartment and this thing is a godsend! No matter what room the litter box was in, it managed to stink up the ENTIRE apartment. Not anymore!
I really like the crystal litter (it does a better job of odor control than clay litter)and I'm so happy I don't have to scoop anymore. I hated that job and after scooping, the clumps went into my wastebasket, where they just sat for days and continued to stink up the apartment. The crystal litter dries everything out, so no smell at all.
I really like the litter cartridges, too. I used to have to haul bags of cat litter up three flights of stairs and the cartridges have eliminated that task. They are a bit pricey, but they last a long time and they just work so well.
The box is a really nice size. I had an automatic litter box before and it was huge and took up lot of space. This is nicely compact, but large enough for my 18lb cat (I know, ridiculous. He's big boned.) The motor is totally quiet, too.
