Product Description CatGenie, the world's only self-flushing, self-washing cat box. You'll never scoop, touch or change litter again. The CatGenie Secret?... Washable Granules, not litter. Collecting cat waste in a box of litter is unsanitary. Cleaning the mess out is unpleasant. To satisfy a cat's need to dig and cover, CatGenie uses comfy, permanent Washable Granules instead of disposable litter. To cats, it's just like using a clean litter box. CatGenie is more than a cat toilet it's a modern appliance. Every day, it automatically flushes just cat waste completely out of the home. Then washes itself clean. You never scoop, touch or change litter. CatGenie is cat sanitation that is as clean as a cat. Unlike all litter boxes, only CatGenie automatically: The GenieHand scoops and separates solids, which get liquefied and flushed along with liquid waste for safe, easy drainage out of the home.

Catgenie - Good idea in theory, in practice, it needs refinement July 18, 2008 I purchased mine in march of 08. for the first 2 months, i had zero problems with it. since then, i get errors for clogs and the water fill being slow. the manual says to clean the machine once every 6 months. if i dont do it every 3 to 4 weeks, i will get errors on almost every cycle. And this thing stinks up my house from time to time. It will pulvarize the feces instead of scooping it up. then when it hits the drying cycle, my whole house will smell like shampooed s---. Im not kidding, it is nausating. when i called catgenie, they told me that there is nothing they can do about that, and suggested i change my cats diet to a food that will make thier feces harder, so it wont be pulvarized. from what i can tell, thier feces is normal now, plus, the machine worked fine for the first 2 months, and my cats have been on the same diet for the last 3 years. catgenie's customer service is great until that 90 day return period is up, then its almost like you are flagged in thier system or something. They are less willing to help. i still prefer this over daily scooping of my old box, but for the price i paid ($350 for the tuxedo) i would expect to NOT have to do the amount of maintence to it that i have to do. now i dont spend my time scooping daily, but now spend it figuring out whats causing the error code, and airing out the house. oh, and those granules stick to the cats feet and are tracked all over the house.
Maybe this will help others July 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have three cats, a 3-year-old and 2 8-year-olds, and a very bad back. I live alone (although my brother, not a huge cat lover, had been great about coming by to get the heavy bags of cat litter out of my trunk) and have been unable to maintain the cat boxes to anyone's level of happiness.
Before purchasing, I did lots of Catgenie research. What a great idea! I feel that whatever shortcomings this machine has, the technology is here and will only get more advanced and any wrinkles should be ironed out in my cats' lifetime, imagine! It seemed to me the good outweighed the bad so I took the plunge. From what I read, it seemed the biggest problems were clogs, draining and acclimation issues.
What I did was install mine in the laundry room but on a table (about 32" high). By elevating the catgenie, the water hose has a straight across shot to the cold water line and potential clogs have less gravity to fight (I did cut a couple feet of hose, with the CG folk's blessing). I also have a set of kitty stairs (which they're not using now but may as they age) to the table.
My brother installed it but it was super easy. The brochures and literature that came with the CG were very clear and easy to understand. In my opinion, it's not as loud as the washer and when it drains, sounds exactly like the washer draining. Doesn't upset the cats at all.
Another concern I had before purchasing was the "baking poo-brownies" smell I'd read about, when small pieces of solids get missed by the scoop and went thru the blowdrying stage. Sounded awful. As my CG is elevated, I have absolutely no problem removing a quick scoop of solids the 'old-fashioned' way if I'm in the area. Just trying to beat the odds here. For others with bad backs and now that I think about it, I don't know why I didn't elevate the old boxes years ago.
My biggest problem has been getting the two older kitties acclimated. My 3 year old took to the new CG within a day or two of setting it up. Their old boxes were in the basement, not on the same floor as my laundry room. The first step was closing the kitty-door to the basement and moving a cat box to the laundry room. I placed the old box beside the table holding the catgenie, on top of my dryer. No problems, no accidents, everyone was happy. I tried to leave the old box dirty, as the CG folk suggest in the acclimation guide, but I couldn't stand that. Once everyone was happy going in the laundry room, I made the mistake of taking away the old dirty box, this was still within one week of set-up. Some call them accidents, these were on purposes! One of the older cats was so angry with me, she pee'd on my desk. OK, back to the small regular litter box beside the CG. Next, I (correction, my strong-backed brother) began switching positions of the genie and the boxes every couple days, hoping to 'confuse' the cats into using the genie. The older two didn't buy it. Ok, at least they're all using the right room again. Next after a day or two, I got rid of the regular litter and filled the small box with the CG litter. They're buying it, no accidents, no problems. Still switching box positions, but at least they're now all in the right room AND used to the new litter.
I would run the cat genie (remember the youngest one loves it), then remove the clean, warm litter and pour the soiled CG litter from the small box into the genie to wash. I know, I know, sounds like a lot of work for a machine that's supposed to do it all by itself. If you decide to wash litter this way, be sure that when you dump the dirty CG litter into the genie, you give it a few minutes to drain before hitting the clean button. I didn't and experienced my first clog. Because the litter was really wet, the scoop came down and fed itself a whole scoop of wet litter, right into the hopper! Oops. My patience paid off though. Several days after the big switch to CG litter only, only one of my older ones was still using the old box. Time for tough love. She spent last Thursday night locked in the laundry room with only the CG. Lo and behold, she used it. I was glad, but really, what choice did she have? It was the next day, Friday, almost a week ago, that I saw her using it voluntarily and has been using it ever since. SUCCESS!! Whipped cream for everyone. Ask any animal lover, would you invest 4-5 weeks to toilet train your animal? I think the answer would be YES.
Caution now, it's only been 6 weeks that I've owned it, only 5 days since all cats are using it. I still have my original packing boxes, just in case, but for now, we all are so happy. My friends are happy too that I'm now able to discuss things other than cat waste.
I've called CG customer service a couple times and found them (especially Selina, the angel who helped me through the clog!) exceptional. They're on call until 11 p.m. (Eastern) and seem to be genuinely interested in helping.
Good luck. I'll update later if I run into problems. I hope this helps.
Cate Genie automatic cat litter July 15, 2008 This cat litter is much more reliable than the Littermaids I used to have. Its ability to flush the waste into the sewer in liquid form means I do not even have to empty any used litter. The only maintenance it needs is occasional topping up of the reusable granules and replacement of the sanitation solution cartridges. My only complaint is that it cleans itself on a regular schedule based on a timer. It would be better it if cleaned itself after each time one of my 2 cats used it. It already has sensors to stop it from starting a cleaning cycle if a cat is still using the litter so I do not see why it cannot incorporate that functionality. That is the only aspect in which the Littermaid is superior.
So far so good indeed... July 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased my unit in February '08 and installed it sometime in March (I had non-standard plumbing and this slowed the works slightly.) From reading other reviews, I would say I have the version with the most common bugs worked out, and I have had virtually NO mechanical problems with the unit so far (4 months or so). It seems like longer than that since I last had to deal with lugging litter around and cleaning the vile box. I love my Cat Genie.
Good points: -It does what they say it does. What a Godsend for the basically lazy. -A person entering my home will not be immediately informed by their nose, that cats are within. -My cats adapted to it nearly instantly and really appreciate the clean litter box. -So far, no mechanical problems. -No "baked poo" problems as reported by others. -A vast improvement over doing it by hand.
Not quite so good points but entirely liveable... -I hate "perfumes" etc so I ordered the "unscented Sani-solution", it still has more smell than I like, but I can live with it. -The litter does track petty badly. However it is really quite innocuous, and I have the mats and cover which keep this down to a managable level. I cannot imagine using it with an enthusiastic "kicker" of litter unless I had all of the accessories.
-Haven't tought my cats to flush, but this was true of the old system where they simply used the toilet directly...MOST of the time. They are far more reliable with the Cat Genie. Besides they are getting older.
never worked properly June 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great idea and I was really excited to have this. Paid a plumber to come set it up in the laundry room as there is not enough room in my small bathroom. Cats took a long time to get used to it being there and this was not helped by the piercing beeps it emitted when first turned on. Finally got it working and the cats even used it once, but it stopped working soon after and again would not stop beeping. Called the company and after much fiddling they decided I needed a new top unit (the one with the machine etc). The new unit did not work. Back on the phone with the tech support for about 1.5 hours of disassembling and reassembling. Still no luck. they decided I needed a new hopper and that did not work. With all the attention the litter box got as well as the beep every time I'd try to fire it up again, the cats won't go near it. I gave up. Now I've got a piece of clutter for the garage shed (over $400 worth) as well as wasted "sand" and solutions. Much too expensive to try to ship back at this point. Also had to pay another plumber to fix what the first guy did. Nothing but frustration and a big waste of money.
