You gotta wonder about the reviews on this June 7, 2008 This is a terrible product and it is unsafe at any height - it should receive negative stars, it is that bad. It is impossible to install safely and correctly and I don't believe that it is intended for vinyl windows although the manufacturer doesn't tell you that. Do you want to run screws into vinyl window frames? What if you decide to take it out? What do you do about the hole then? At least you can fill the hole in wood.
I have no idea what type of window they think this fits but I have Anderson wood that are vinyl clad (no way) and replacement all vinyl windows (not a chance). I suppose it may fit certain types of old style wood windows with PERFECTLY FLAT sash bottoms. Here's the problem: the upper lip of the veranda that is designed to engage the bottom of the window sash (the window closes down on the top and holds the veranda in place) is only 3/8's of an inch high, partly because screw heads protrude and effectively reduce the bearing surface. Why so little material? I have no idea but it is absolutely a design flaw. Further, even if that paltry amount of engagement surface is acceptable to you, there is no way to get a screw into any part of the upper sash to secure the sash to this upper lip because the screw (if you could get it to hit anything at all) will completely miss unless you angle it up or do some other type of butcher job. My sashes are not completely flat on the bottom (Anderson) and this makes it impossible to install this unit because the angled bottom causes the wood on the window frame to be right at the edge of the metal upper lip discussed above. However, even with a totally flat bottom sash you only have 3/8's of an inch to play with. Not enough to safely install a screw.
You have to wonder how anyone could be so stupid to design something like this. What was preventing them from making the upper lip (the thing that is almost solely responsible for keeping this unit in the window) 3/4's of an inch or more? Why 3/8's? Idiots.
I am amazed at some of the reviewers on this thing. I would love to see the butcher jobs on the installation. To say that this thing installs nicely is laughable. Yeah, it installs nicely if you have no comprehension of what a nice install should look like.
CAT VERANDA April 26, 2008 Your cat will LOVE this product. Well made works with replacement windows too. Easy to assemble and install. The door works well and can be locked. The access shelf is a bit weak but after 6 months of use, has not caused a problem. Took my cat a few days to push the door but once she caught on she is out there all day and night.
Cat Veranda April 14, 2008 My Cat LOVES this veranda, she is not an outside cat,so this allows her to be out and enjoy the view. Its better for her then just sitting at the window. she really feels she is outside. The best part is she can come and go as she wants, and I know where she is.
Make sure to secure the sliding sides! April 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a wonderful product, except for the fact that the moveable sides are also moveable by my cat. He pushed one open and jumped through my two-story window. Do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening with your own cat.
Cat Veranda A Great IDEA!! October 19, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I rescue cats and they love having their own little space looking out over our woods. This allows them fresh air as well as safety. They can watch the the squirrels. Also the squirrels can kitty kitty without being ripped apart! THis is a great quality product. I have 5 of them.
