Great so far and easy to use! June 13, 2008 We really struggled to find the proper gate to fit our stairs due to the thick moulding and banister we have. However, after some retro-fitting, this gate blends in quite nicely. My favorite part is the ease of use. Some of the other gates we tried were so hard to open; I can open this with one hand and a baby on my hip.
Handsome gate that works great April 15, 2008 I have two of these Angle Mount gates now as well as an older version of the wooden Safeway gate and I love them. They look nice, they swing nicely, and they latch firmly. The older version of the gate is simpler to latch, but I find it requires constant adjustment of the bolts since they are always coming loose. This new version of the hardware is slightly more finicky to set up and align, but then stays that way for all time, latching and unlatching smoothly through repeated use. As for the difficulty of assembly, I didn't find it as confusing as some here claim. My four year old son helped lay out the parts and figure out how they went together. The long lasting quality and convenient use of this gate compared to cheaper gates (which I have owned and used) is worth the extra work to put it together.
Great gate January 5, 2008 Yes, this gate takes an hour or so to assemble. It's not that confusing if, as the other reviewer said, you lay everything out beforehand. Everything needs to be aligned carefully for the gate to work properly. But if your brackets are aligned, the gate itself can be adjusted so that it seats properly.
I bought this gate because I didn't have a stud right at the top of the stairs. I was able to angle the gate from the nearest stud over to the newel post. The gate opens and shuts easily with one hand, once you get used to the feel of it. You need to raise the whole gate slightly, then let it drop into place. (This is not clearly explained in the directions, either.) Since the latch is on one end of the gate (rather than in the middle, as with some of the plastic gates), you might have to switch your baby to the other hand to close it behind you.
It's an attractive, natural wood color.
What!? September 9, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am on the first step of the instruction manual. Stuck. The line drawing (no text) is so horrendous that I have no idea what I am supposed to do and which part I am supposed to do it with. I've put a hard drive into a computer with less difficulty. It astounds me that the baby industry assumes that 1) parents have infinite free time and love to assemble poorly built stuff, and 2) can comprehend poorly rendered and incomplete instructions. I'd be totally happy to pay twice the price for items that are either pre-assembled or truly required only a small amount of work. There is not a single part of this piece of junk that has been pre-attached. I'll probably return this item, and I certainly will never buy a Kidco item again.
Good quality wood gate May 13, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This gate is very functional and highly versatile. It looks great and blends well with the decor of our room/hallway. It keeps both dog and baby of the stairwell without fail. I agree with other reviewers that installation is difficult; there are MANY parts. I recommend lying all the parts out and labeling them on a piece of cardboard prior to trying to put the thing together. All in all, it still took nearly a full hour; disappointing given much less expensive gates take minutes to install. I still gave it 5 starts given that it is the ONLY gate that I could install at the 80% angle between the wall stud and hardwood banister support.
