Silent : Yes and No April 19, 2008 I have Roborovski hamsters and they just love the silent wheel mini ever since it's been dropped into the tank.
Pros: - Great little workout - The wheel is silent - Ball Bearing makes it fast, to the point my hamsters burn rubber, and fly off the wheel many a time. - Nice color choices: Purple, Green, Blue, Pink, Yellow - Perfect sizing options
Cons: - I cant stand the clacking of the wire base bottom against their aquarium floor, so especially at night - its not a great sound to be woken up by or to wake up to. Resolution: tape it down or glue it down -- I'm hoping to do something about it, that's non-toxic for them.
- It's really fast ball bearing mechanism has them FLYING OFF.
so, I love it, I just wish there was a way to stop the clacking, I want to say add rubber or perhaps those rubber floor mat place keepers, but knowing hamsters, they'd end up chewing it off. hmmff.
Not for dwarf hamsters June 29, 2007 The only reason, honestly, that I gave this 3 stars is because my dwarf hamsters had babies and they love using this wheel (sidenote: never trust a pet store to tell you the gender of your hamsters). Other than that, this wheel would be useless to me because it is not meant for dwarf hamsters, even though it is advertised as such, since they simply do not fit in it.
To make this review more complete, I'll summarize quickly what a good hamster wheel should be and whether this wheel has those features:
This wheel has/is: 1) Silent - relatively speaking. It is quieter than most wheels, but maybe not a Wodent Wheel. 2) Relatively small size so it fits in BOTH cages and aquariums. Warning: Wodent wheels are quite large and would only work if you keep your hamsters in a glass aquarium rather than a wire or plastic cage. 3) Solid plastic rather than bars, so hamsters don't hurt their feet when they slip in between the ruts of the wheel. 4) Feature for attaching to a stand or directly to the wires of a wire cage. 5) Able to take apart for cleaning.
This wheel is not: 1) There is only one and it's a big one for me - wheels must be large enough so that the piece in the center does not touch the hamster's back and the hamster does not have to arch his or her back while running. I got this when my dwarf hamsters were younger and it worked perfectly, but this wheel is too small for an adult dwarf hamster. If you let an adult dwarf use this wheel it may shorten its lifespan because it is extremely unhealthy for them to contort their backs for 3-5 hours of running time per day.
Conclusion: ONLY BUY FOR MICE or if you're willing to throw it away when your baby hamsters grow up.
Breaks easily September 7, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My hamster has broken 5 of these wheels in less than a year but local pet store only sells this type. They are held together by a small bit of plastic once it breaks that's it!!!!
Effective, but a few problems June 11, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This wheel, is as they say, silent. However, the stand for the wheel tends to bang against the bottom of the cage ( glass cages anyway) and I had to tape it down to stop that noise. Also, the wheel's ball bearings tend to keep the wheel spinning too long and my pet mice are sometimes confused about how to step off. The biggest problem is that if your pet goes to the bathroom while running, this wheel is a nightmare. My mice defecate on the wheel, then urinate, and as you can imagine, it creates a rather large mess. This problem is easily fixed by cleaning the wheel with hot soap and water, but the process gets trivial after doing it every day, and it produces an unpleasant scent in the cage. Deespite this, if your pet does not usually relieve him or herself while running, this wheel is 100% silent and is exactly as advertised. Very sturdy, high quality construction.
It has its pros and cons... April 28, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I accidentally broke my original wheel that came with the cage I'm using for my pet gerbil when I tried to pull it out of the door on the top of the cage and it snapped. That day, I went to the local pet store and saw the 4.5" wheel. It looked good, since it could fit through the door which makes cleaning easier. Although it wasn't recommended for gerbil, I was positive mine would fit and not have problems. It didn't. However, I had a problems with it.
After a week or so, the "silent" spinner wasn't so silent. When my gerbil ran, it made a sound similar to a card in a bicycle spoke. I checked out the wheel and noticed the sound was coming from where the white backing was fastened to the color front. I simply pressed duct tape around the outside of the circle and it fixed the problem, although it doesn't look as nice and the duct tape needs replaced after few months.
That's the major problem that stops me from giving this anything higher than a 3. However, I will say that I've had no other problems with the wheel. The plastic is thick enough that the gerbil shows no interest in chewing on it and the axl and clip to the cage are both top notch. Also, the few colors they come in are a nice touch as well. Finally, the concave insides of the wheel are great, since my gerbil was falling out of the previous wheel which was simply slanted.
Since I have a metal cage, I haven't used the wheel base that comes with the product, so I can't comment on it.
