 Solved problem in 1 day July 6, 2008
The turf battle over furniture ended the 1st day placed Scat mat on couch and chair. I could have saved thousands of dollars worth of furniture if I got this produce sooner. The cats respect the mat and know exactly where it is but it did not hurt or traumatize them because they will lay right next to it. The cats also know as soon as it is not on the furniture. After a contact or 2 the mat will do the job even when not turned on. Well worth the cost

We bought this to keep our cats out of the bedroom. It worked most of the time but not if the cat doesn't step on two wires at a time. The cats now circumvent the mat by jumping over it or stepping around it if we accidentally leave the door open. If the door is closed and the mat is on the ground in front of the door, we don't get any scratching at the door anymore.

My Vet tech recommended this item to keep our new puppy out of the laundry room where we kept the cat's litter box. It worked immediately and she wouldn't step on it again, but unfortunately we should have ordered the largest size available and rolled up the excess. The puppy was too smart for us. She saw the cat jump over it and now she takes a running leap to clear the mat and crashes into the laundry room. Now the noise alerts us that she is up to no good. I am still very impressed with the fast results it produced, just wish the dog wasn't so smart.

This is really effective at getting animals to stay off of furniture - it just requires a "refresher" every once in a while. Where I didn't find it effective was at keeping my cats out of particular rooms - they just found ways to get around and over it. It really does pack some static punch at the higher levels - as we found out accidentally a few times.
The power pack died at one point, but the customer service reps at Contech were some of the best I've ever dealt with and it was replaced very quickly.
