4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect cage for syrian hamster   June 14, 2008
Had this cage for a week now. We have done everything we can to create a stress free environment according to the guidelines from RSPCA. The syrian hammie appears quite happy. She allowed us to pet her after 6 days. It doesn't really bite the plastic edges. She naps everywhere in the cage. But generally burrows in the bottom tier. br /br /I recommend that you buy this at the shop. The plastic is brittle shipping might damage it. br /br /Bought it for $[...] plus tax at petlandbr /br /Pros: reasons for 4 starsbr /-two tiers top tier has half the floor space as the base, with dishes for water and food.br /-water bottle can be placed right above the dish (as pictured)so you give it a squeeze to fill the dish up.br /-water bottle doesn't drip but hamster doesn't know how to drink from itbr /-Wheel is silent after you tie a string or use a washer inside. br /-The wheel has a slide and go doorbr /-very easy to put together. The instructions seem to have the steps wrong. Your common sense is better. br /-VERY easy to clean. When the hammie is busy running in the wheel you can shut the door to lock it in, lift up the clear cage with the wheel and tower attached. This leaves behind the base for you to clean out. The hamster has no idea the cleaning is taking place. They are more likely to believe that they have travelled far to another place that is cleaner. br /br /- has not escapedbr /br /br /Cons- reasons why its not 5 stars. I'm very picky though. br /-Female hammie poo and urine are notorious, can stink up any cage quickly. This one doesn't really have circulation. Need to leave top cover open while it is sleeping. br /-top tier is a bit slippery I've seen the hammie fall over while trying to clean herself. She was however standing on one hind leg and reaching for her bum. br /-orange ladder provided is uselessbr /br /DIYbr /-You can drill more holes (no bigger than the ones they already have) at the wheel and top cover for better ventilationbr /-drill small holes first before drilling at the desired size, because plastic can crack.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best   April 13, 2007

I've owned many hamsters in my life and this is by far one of the best cages I've had. As a kid I can remember the old cages with the metal bars. The hamsters were constantly escaping since they could climb up the sides like monkey bars and out the top. It also did not contain the shavings very well as they would dig and make it fall out the sides.br /br /As I got older we had a glass aquarium that we used as a cage. First we tried it without a lid, just because there were no airholes and we were scared that a lid wouldn't give them enough air. They somehow would always figure out how to get out of it but jamming the wheel and then climing up on top of it. We finally did put a lid on it and that helped some.br /br /I just recently bought this cage. It's easy to put together. All you have to do it look at the front of the box to see how it works. If there are questions about it, there are simple directions on where everything should go. Once you get the base and the top together though, the rest is customizable depending on how you want it laid out. br /br /I love the wheel and how it is located on the outside of the cage, giving the little furballs more room to move around. I also like how there's a "door" that you can close when you want to close off access to the wheel. I do this at night so he doesn't keep me awake. The one thing about the wheel is that at first it was not very quiet. The peices holding it together weren't tight enough, leaving wiggle room, which made the plastic clank together when he ran his laps. There was a simple fix by making a washer out of a paper towel, just to make it a tighter fit. Now we're both happy. I may even try leaving his wheel open tonight and see how it goes.br /br /The build on tunnels are alot of fun. I've already moved mine around some, trying to find a good way to let him move around. I'm planning on adding more tunnel pieces over time.br /br /The water bottle is not quite like the usual water bottles, but it works ok for now. I'll probably replace it. I places it over the little "dish" built into the floor so it catches the water that occasionally drips out. I've noticed he drinks out of the dish much more often than he actually does the bottle, so maybe that's a good thing. br /br /The ventilation doesn't seem to be an issue, as there are air holes all over. Hamsters are natural burrowers so they are used to being in enclose places underground. Every now and then I will just take the top lid off if I think he could use some fresh air while he plays. There doesn't seem to be any way he can get up there to escape through the top since the walls are plastic, but we'll see how innovative he gets. br /br /The only downside to this cage is that the lower level is not accessible to people. It is not very transparent. It probably gives the hamsters exactly what they need, a safe place they can hide/sleep without being bothered. That means you have to wait for them to be playing around in their cage before trying to take them out. The bottom is hard to see through, so sometimes I will glance and not notice him in there and get a little nervous that he's figured out his escaping act, only to realize with a closer look that he was just curled up in the corner where he always is. br /br /Overall this is a great product. I'm planning to buy more accessories for this

5 out of 5 stars great home   March 5, 2007
My daughter requested this cage for her mice. I was not fond of the idea because I have never liked all plastic habitats. I ordered the cage, it was delivered quickly and I have to say that my thoughts were wrong. This is a wonderful cage. Its easy to maintain and clean. The wheel is easily removeable for night time and it is not loud like most wheels. Also my daughters mice seem to love the cage. we have it connected to two other cages and they hardly ever go accross to any of the other cages now that we have added this one on. Great product!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and stability for hamsters!   January 12, 2007

My hamster Bam just LOVES this cage. He uses it attached the S.A.M. Park Avenue condo which is a combination plastic/wire cage. As a kid I always had hamsters but I always had cheap wire cages with really bad plastic bottoms. I looked at the Super Pet Critter Trail cages before deciding S.A.M. was the way to go. The Super Pet cages are cheap quality, easily escapable, and don't have very good burrowing spots. At first I was concerned about a plastic module because of the lack of air circulation but it has plenty of air holes not too mention when attached to a wire cage Bam has the best of both worlds. The plastic is warm in the winter and the wire is cool in the summer.br /br /Those who complained about the smell of the cages and the chewing of the plastic here's two suggestions:br /br /ALWAYS clean the cage at least once a week if not every 4-5 days. If you can't do that, you don't want a hamster.br /br /As for chewing, chewing is a sign of stress. If your gerbils/hamsters/other rodents are excessively chewing it could be because they don't have enough darkness during the day, their home isn't clean enough, or that they don't have enough room. In their natural habitats gerbils and hamsters can cover many miles looking for food. They need lots of room and things to keep them occupied.br /br /Hope this helps. Oh yeah, buy this cage as well as a few add ons, one cage isn't even close to being enough room!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CAGE!!!   January 7, 2007

This is a great cage. Nothing bad has happened to mine yet. My hamster loves her wheel and the tubes. She REALLY loves the tower too. For those of you who are saying it's hard to clean, you're being really lazy. It takes a little while but who cares? It's easy to clean and you only have to clean it once a week. I would chose this over the Super Pet cages because small animals tend to escape through the petting zones in them. Well, maybe if you duct tape it, it will be alright but anyways, I recomend this cage!
