Something Every Aquarium Owner Needs April 1, 2005 Ever since I was little I've used the pH test kits. Wardley makes a nice kit that's in everyone's budget. Anyone who has a fish tank needs this if they ever plan to add water to the tank.
A bad pH could lead to the death of fish. The books out there that describe each species will tell you the ideal pH. However, most water is far from neutral, which is a good happy medium that 95% of fish will survive in. My water is "alkaline" as it is above the neutral mark of 7.0. I use this kit now and then to make sure the pH is 7.0 or close to it.
If the pH is too high you need to get the compound that lowers it. There's also one for those with "acid" water (my old house had this problem so I have that compound as well).
One word of warning--if you have trouble telling your blues and greens apart this is not a good kit for you. The readings are always in shades of blue and green.
