Amazon.com Review Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

Cats broke it in 3 weeks May 2, 2008 My cats kept playing with the scoop as it was scooping and the safety mechanism stopped it from cleaning. After this happened a few times the box became too clogged to clean and eventually the mechanism broke.
No more back breaking scoping May 2, 2008 This works very good without all the back breaking scoping. The only downside I see is with 2 cats you need to change the container more often.
Litter Maid April 28, 2008 The quality control on this item is awful. The first one I received did not work. There was some sort of electrical problem. I returned it and Amazon immediately sent a replacement and that one was missing the AC Adapter. When I called about it, I learned that they would have to send me an entire new product and I would have to pay for it until they received the returned item (which is very large and cumbersome and hard to send). So I kept the one without the adapter since I had an old adapter to use. My complaint is not with Amazon, but rather with Littermaid. It has very poor quality control.
Better Than Manual Scooping April 27, 2008 This is my second Littermaid. My first worked great but my cat died so I sold it on Ebay. However, it always worked well but you have to use the correct litter or the Littermaid will not work as advertised. I never had a problem with the motor failing or other issues I've read in these reviews. I also read that if the motor jams there is a reset that many user may not know about and this may be a reason for so many returns. Once again in the year I used it the motor never stopped working. The box is a bit noisy so I wouldn't suggest setting this in a bedroom. Also, there is a chance that the rake moving and noise may scare your cat and they will not want to use it. Try setting it up with the power off for a few days and then turn it on after the cat gets use to using the box. The only other issue is that there is a raking motion that pushes all the waste forward but it also pushes good litter with it so the end result is good litter gets dumped into the plastic bin. I had the option of buying the newer unit but read so many bad reviews that I decided to go for one of the older models. I also build a table with a hole in it. Then I cut out the bottom of the plastic container that catches the waste. Now the unit dumps the waste into a 13 gallon trash bag and I can go quite a while without emptying it. With the stock container you can go about 3 days with one cat. If I wasn't setting up the table and larger bag I would look more closely at the Smart Scoop. It seems to waste less litter.
LitterBox April 16, 2008 This is a great product. There is only one thing I don't like about it. It is hard to get the plastic liners filled with cat poop & pee out of the machine. Otherwise, this is a great product. It keeps the cat box clean and neat!!
