Liquid is much better June 23, 2008 I only use dye to restore old handbags. For my purposes, I find that the powder dyes are inconsistent and don't coat my bags evenly. Every time I've used powered dye on one of my bags, it had to be destroyed due to the way the color settles. Even when I redyed the bags, the color set around the powdered color and not over it. For thick materials, I feel the liquid dye is best.
disappointing October 30, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
The product did not accomplish what I intended it for-remove color on whites. I was surprised at the size of the packet- perhaps I should have paid more attention on the details of the product.
D'Black Beauty October 13, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought a black jacket at Singapore about two years ago and due to wear and tear of daily usage, the black became gray with dirty white spots. As I have experience in dyeing, I searched for black dye until I found this Rit Dye Black Powder and, WOW I have a Black Beauty.
Best for uniforms!!! August 5, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this product! I use it on my daughter's school uniform shirts. One day she got barbecue sauce in one of her shirts, She put it in the hamper without saying a word. I took a chance and washed it with the rest of the shirts. After the wash I couldn't tell which shirt was stained. Bravo! Now I wash all of my whites in White Wash, it doesn't leave whites "yellowed" like bleach can sometimes do. I would highly reccomend it.
good for nylon, bad for cotton, very bad for tie-dyeing May 17, 2006 39 out of 43 found this review helpful
All-purpose dye contains a mixture of an acid dye, which works on nylon, silk, and wool, but not on cotton, and a direct dye, which works rather poorly on cotton. It will not work at all on polyester, acrylic, or acetate. If you are dyeing cotton, you will be much happier with fiber reactive dye, because it is easier to use (no boiling water!), brighter and prettier in color, and much longer lasting in the laundry. Fiber reactive dyes sold by Amazon include Dylon Cold Water Dye, Dylon Permanent Fabric Dye, and, best of all, Jacquard Procion dye. Do a search on Amazon for those dyes now! br /br /If you do choose to use all-purpose dye, first, be sure to buy enough. Each box will dye only one-half pound of fabric for a medium shade, or one-quarter of a pound of fabric for a very dark shade; for a pastel shade, you can dye one pound of fabric with one box. When dyeing nylon, silk, or wool, add six tablespoons of white vinegar per gallon of water; for cotton, do not use vinegar, which won't help, but do add one cup of salt. Using a cooking pot which you will never again use for food (Rit dye is not safe for utensils used in food preparation!), bring the dyebath to a good simmer, 190 to 200 degrees F. (87 degrees C.), add your garment, and continue to simmer for half an hour, stirring frequently. For solid colors, be sure to use a pot that is large enough to allow the garment to move freely. br /br /Even when all-purpose dye is applied to cotton correctly, with simmering hot water, it still tends to wash out in the laundry and bleed on other clothing. To prevent both of these problems, you must apply a commercial dye fixative, such as Retayne or Raycafix; try a web search to find a place from which to order. Washfastness of items dyed with all-purpose dye is greatly improved by the use of the right fixative. Vinegar and salt will not make all-purpose dye on cotton last long in the laundry.
