I saw this on your other site yesterday – such an amazing shot – so much love and lost love all in one photo. congrats.

max_thinks_sees March 20, 2010 at 11:03 pm

unconditional love….emotional shot

Houser March 20, 2010 at 11:12 pm

Hey bud – why’d you decide to go b/w on Flickr?

wvs March 20, 2010 at 11:57 pm

wondering which works better. Colour or BW?

Yazdgerd March 21, 2010 at 12:16 am

تو چه آیتی خدا را؟

Saaeed March 21, 2010 at 12:50 am

full of felling. very nice

Scott-5x5 March 21, 2010 at 1:07 am

I recommend people check out the colour version at the link Sam provided, and to read the comments there too… quite a debate!

Shahin Edalati March 21, 2010 at 1:31 am

i go with BW, it’s more dramatic

striatic March 21, 2010 at 1:32 am

i think i like the BW .. normally i like colour better because BW can kind of defer the reality of the photo a little .. but in this case the black and white emphaises the crumply skin folding embrace and makes it that much more intimate.

Computer Science Geek March 21, 2010 at 2:20 am

The black and white is more emphatic.

mimbrava March 21, 2010 at 2:34 am

Mutual trust and love, despite the conditions. Outstanding image.

anooshamen March 21, 2010 at 3:31 am

Houser March 21, 2010 at 4:40 am

I think the color version works better for two distinct reasons.

First, black and white has the capability to turn most photos into timeless pieces; images which transcend our day-to-day lives. The impact in this image (for me) is that this is happening *now* and speaks not to some timeless human condition (though it very well may do that also), but that it is very poignant and should be right in front of our faces. Somehow I think that "immediacy" is lost in black and white.

Second, an important visual component to this story (as if there arent enough in this amazing shot) is the dog food on the ground in the lower left. In black and white, the tones mute this element.

That’s my take on it.

Fred March 21, 2010 at 5:20 am

I like the color version more, too. Don’t know why ;)

Scott-5x5 March 21, 2010 at 6:13 am

Houser – good points! Wasn’t sure why I liked the colour one better, but that’s exactly it. Well put.

BlueRower March 21, 2010 at 6:44 am

great photo, one of my favorites

Cilest March 21, 2010 at 7:31 am

not sure – think i go for the b/w version…
but both are great!
favorite.

Chow Baby March 21, 2010 at 8:10 am

I agree with Houser that the color is more emotional in this shot. The dirt under his nails & on his black pants really show up in color. In color I felt like I was there seeing it for myself. Both human & dog heads down, you start to feel down yourself. Great study of the human condition…

Daniele Florio March 21, 2010 at 8:33 am

I love this shot, so that I’ve made a drawing inspired by this one…I’m not really good at drawing but I hope you’ll like it! Thank you :)

d-fuse March 21, 2010 at 8:44 am

B/W works better because of the texture. Even the cup on the upper right helps on the composition…nice attention to detail.

owow889 March 21, 2010 at 8:46 am

My heart hurts to look at this. Amazing.

Fender Barlow™ March 21, 2010 at 9:02 am

Still one of my favourite photos that Sam has shown us.

hlkljgk March 21, 2010 at 9:11 am

heart wrenching. superb capture.

SoMeatless March 21, 2010 at 10:06 am

Wow.. that’s just an amazing shot. Sad and sweet at the same time. You can really see a lot of love and trust in this picture.
Love it.

electrikgypsy March 21, 2010 at 10:23 am

while i was in vancouver walking along davies street, i ran into this very man, sitting in this very position, with his dog curled up so small and tight to keep warm.
i was taken away at the moment i saw him, but was blown away that i found someone who had taken a picture that captures that very feeling.
great work, the black and white is very effective.

Crafty_witchy_girl March 21, 2010 at 11:16 am

This is a really beautiful, amazing shot.
It brings tears to my eyes.

m0riann March 21, 2010 at 12:08 pm

amazing photo…and amazing how you can’t even see his face but there is so much emotion…the way he’s holding the dog…

You evoked so much emotion with this photograph. Dogs truly are mans best friend.

jake.mroz March 21, 2010 at 5:50 pm

meh. it’s a show to get money. good trick, too, judging by the reactions of everyone looking at the picture.

Sandy Edgar March 21, 2010 at 6:07 pm

I’m a cat person normally but I think dogs are great, if I ever find myself to be homeless I think I would like to share that part of my life with a dog over a cat. They are such wonderful personalities.

Daniel Testa March 21, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Dominic 2007 March 21, 2010 at 7:26 pm

What a powerful image. I much prefer the color version. The color of the man’s hair and skin blending with the color of the dog’s fur is beautiful, it is as though life is flowing between them. Often in color photos there are elements which become emphasized because of their brilliant colors and not for their importance, and this distracts from the image. There is only one element here in that category: the red decal on the window in the upper part of the image. Other than that, the color photo is perfect. I also agree with Houser’s comment about the dog food getting lost in the B&W photo.

artandwar March 21, 2010 at 8:12 pm

omg ;_; *cry*

Golden Hot Pants March 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm

This brings tears to my eyes. The bond between man and dog captured perfectly on film…or flash card.

Heramb Naria March 21, 2010 at 9:14 pm

truly wonderful

bearandblizz March 21, 2010 at 9:29 pm

The really sad thing you guys are missing is that more and more towns and counties are passing laws on illegal camping. This man and his dog will soon be removed and housed separately, then of course executed…

All with your tax dollars. So you not only didnt help them, you killed them.

Congrats, hope you sleep well.
