I was skeptical at first. Living in dry southern California, I’ve had a hard time CREATING, nevermind maintaining humidity. But the Tropicaire delivers on it’s description. Unlike a cool mist humidifier that emits a stream of visible water vapor and can raise humidity to over 90%, the Tropicaire doesn’t even look like air is emitting from it. However measure the RH (relative humidity) and it does maintain between 50-60% which is better than I was able to do with constant hand spraying. Plus there’s the added benefit of circulating the stale humidified air. I’d give it 5 stars if there was a way to control the amount of humidity produced. Although you can purchase different air pumps and valves to control the air flow into the unit, it doesn’t seem to affect the amount of humidity it’s able to create. So if you need over 60% humidity, I don’t think this would be enough.
I use a tetra whisper air pump with this product. The humidity was around 30% before using the TropicAire and now it’s at 50-60%. I think it could be increased if the entire enclosure was covered as it is only partially covered now.
Okay so this item was shipped to me in it’s original box with a shipping tag slapped onto it. Any protection for the product while it ships? NO.
So I decide to forget about it as long as it works that’s all that matters. Right? WRONG! After about 5 days of this being plugged in the adapter on the lids of it that you connect to the hose starts rusting, clogs up the hose and doesn’t allow any air to pass. So I open it and clean the adapter off screw it back in and replace the hose. Does this help? NOPE. Now this new hose is clogged and has turned orange from the rust in just two days. ALSO water gets into the hose and bubbles. I did not shake this product of fill it to much and ever since pouring the water into it, it has sat on a desk that is never touched. So why did this happen???? Wish I had pictures so I could post links to them. Any one else have these problems?
I purchased this as part of a system to humidify my hermit crab tank. I also purchased an air pump. After filling the tank with distilled water, and covering the tank so there was only a small area for air to flow out, I set the system up. The suction cups provided to hold the tube up in the tank do not work well, they failed to stay secure. With some ingenuity I was able to work around this problem. The system works great. Make sure you read the directions.
Shipping took a while, 2 days longer than the estimated UPS delivery date, and once the unit arrived, I filled it up with water only to find out the unit was damaged. There was a dent at the bottom with a hole. I could have tried for a return, but seeing as how the cheapest shipping was over half the cost of the unit, it really wasn’t worth it, and I wasn’t willing to wait another 10 days for a replacement to be delivered. I ended up melting a candle over the hole to seal it, which seems to be doing the trick.
Now for the actual product, what can I say other than it works. I use it to provide humidity for a tortoise I have in a 10 gallon terrarium. Running it with the normal mesh on the top doesn’t seem to do anything, but when I seal the top as the instructions mention, I saw the humidity go from 30-60% to 85-95% (depending on the time of the day/night). Now I just need something to let the lamps through to the terrarium.
Anyways, as for metal connectors etc, I don’t know about that since mine is all plastic. I would recommend buying local if possible though since this item is pretty flimsy and if you get a bad one, being able to get a replacement easily.
