Get a book which will give you lots of advice which I couldn't possibly type all on here. The most important things are:1) Change food and water daily.2) Feed a dry hamster mix food, which you can supplement with fresh fruit/veg every other day. Too much too soon will upset your hamsters stomach.3) Let your hamster sleep during the day. They are nocturnal so will do that.4) Keep your hamsters cage out of direct sunlight, draughts, predators (cats etc.).5) Ensure that the cage you keep your hamster in is secure and safe.6) Totally clean out the cage at least once a week. If you are using sawdust as your substrate simply remove the wet areas every other day to reduce the smell.7) Ensure your hamster has somewhere quite and safe to sleep. You can purchase suitable 'house' style beds from a pet store, or simply place a suitable amount of bedding in the cage and your hamster will make the bed himself/herself!

go to the library or a bookstore or a pet store and they should have books and stuff. i cant remember the title of the book i got, but it was really helpful. i think it might've been called "Small Pets" or something like that.
