My gerbils are really old, 4 years. I have noticed they are less active than thry used to be, back in the day. So, how do you care for old gerbils? I am worried that they might become obese. Another worry is that one of the gerbils is making this wierd noise, a bit like when a human has the flu. Plus, i dont handle the gerbils because they bite, so what will happen noe of them dies; wont the lone gerbil we sad and lonely? Gerbils are social animals.

Have a vet look at both gerbils since you think one is sick. Make sure the vet specializes in small animals. I guess give them good food and special treats often because I don't think they will live much longer. Just keep them as happy and healthy as possible. You must be doing something right. My hamsters only lived to be 2. Ask your vet what to do if one dies. I think you can have just one gerbil, but it may need extra attention to keep from being lonely. Hope this helps and good luck!
