Set it free down by a creek or river any body of water similar to where it would really live. Don't think these are pets. They are wild things. Do wash your hands well after handling cause some turtles are known to carry salmonella.

Put it back where you found it.Snapping turtles snap. When its bigger, it can snap a finger off. They're dangerous. I was driving and found one that had been hit by a car but was still alive. When I brought it in to the wildlife rescue people they told me I was either very brave or really stupid to pick the thing up because they're so dangerous. I could have been seriously hurt. And you can't tame them. They're wild animals.

I have two young snappers. One from last spring hatch and the other from the year before. We use a really good circulartory filter system (with out it they get nasty). Even that doesnt always help the smell of the snapper completely. These animals live well over 50 years and do get huge and dangerous. We feed both live food and pellets. We have live plants in with them too. I have installed an island and many breething perches (so the turtle can be lazy and get air) , Plus we have a bubbler that we plug in on occasion (carl really likes bubbles!) I handel them often and they dont fear me so they dont bite. The worst they do is scratch a little. When they get bigger, we plan on making a huge "wet land" pond for them. The more space you give them the better. They like live (feeder type but nice to look at) fish, and fresh water shrimp. Also when they get bigger handel them from the rear of the shell and wear gloves, to be carefull about a finger removing bite. I also have a really soft tooth brush for when their shells get mucky (was a problem before we started to use filter). U can e mail me if you got any more questions

I have raised several snapping turtles. They bite hard, but are not dangerous.Do not pick them up by the tail, you can injure them. Hold them by the back of the shell. They are easy to keep. Babies eat worms, insects & fish. Adults eat fish & rodents. They require large enclosures; I keep mine in horse watering tanks. They are messy. They should have good filtration and frequent water changes.
