Customer Review: Good enough to make me write a review
Don't get me wrong. I deliberated about buying this album for quite awhile. It seemed like everything I was hearing by John Reis sounded essentially the same, and there didn't seem to be any point in acquiring more of his stuff, no matter how well he did it. But it was a good investment. Back Off Cupids is some of the loudest Reis music I've heard, but it's not the hard-charging masculine rock I was used to. It's pretty hard to compare to his other projects, even though all the trademark elements are there. You definitely have to hear it to understand. Then again, maybe you won't. Back Off Cupids is complicated. But it's more worthwhile than most of the Reis encounters I've had. Go figure.
Customer Review: Back off cupids :A John Reis solo album -mostly instrumental
John Reis has always been one of those highly influencial figures in the Indy Rock scene. A very prolific influencial figure at that. The first song on this album "Meek Inherits Space", starts off this album perfectly and is highly reminiscent of his past bands yet still stabbing forward. Driving, twisting, pulling the wool over your eyes at times, this recording is a step in a new direction. Adding in new sounds, new tricks and techniques, Reis has definately added to his repertoire. This album did not blow me away, but I do listen to it and I treat it like a new addition on an old well built house. If you do not own any other Reis recordings please refer to: Rocket From The Crypt ** Drive Like Jehu ** Hot Snakes ** Pitchfork !
