they do not like cold environments. i took one to work, where they keep the a/c running all year, and it hardly ever moved, even though it was still alive. betta bio gold food is the best kind because it doesn't sink and it doesn't cloud the water. they breathe air from above the water, so plants are not necessary (some people will swear they are, but they really aren't).

I have a very spoiled betta; he lives in a 5 gallon heated tank with 2 filters, 3 live plants, 3 corydoras catfish and a plecostomus (sucker fish). I feed him 2 betta pellets and a sprinkle of dried blood worms every day but he likes to eat the catfishes' sinking food. Make sure when you change the water that you put some kind of water conditioner in there first (BEFORE it's in the tank/bowl)--the chlorine is deadly to fish. In the wild, bettas live in rice paddies and mud puddles. But in captivity it's nice to give them clean water and a plant.

keep the beta in company with other betas. like a community tank, big one though to avoid a deadly fight.
