Default Fish tank filter just stopped working!?!? I am new to fish and the caring of them...?

this morning I wake up and I dont hear my filter, and sure enough it stopped working. I have only had it for a month. Yes it is plugged in, and yes the outlet works. What should I do? Any test to check to see if it is broken or should I just go out and buy another one?

If it is warranteed then take it back to the store and get a replacement. You may want to see if anything is caught inside where the filter pack goes, but otherwise I would just get a new one ASAP. Fish are very sensitive to the water's ph balance and such, and you don't want to risk them getting sick.

yes, you should get a new one if you have fish in the tank.

Well... It sounds like it is a mechanism problem if it doesn't work at all. If you're hearing sounds coming from it but you don't see any water intake or outflow then it could just be clogged and need to be cleaned with a carbon change. If you've only had the filter a month, it should still be under warranty and you could contact the company about getting it replaced. If you don't have another supply of oxygen for your fish, you're going to need get a temp. replacement until you get a new one from the company or get an oxygen stone. You should be good without filtration for a few days but you'll still need something to create dissolved oxygen. Oh and typically, if you bought it from PetsMart or Petco, if you've used it for a month and it didn't come broken out of the box, the store won't replace it. You will have to contact the manufacturer to get it replaced. They're the ones who create and uphold the warranties, not the store from which you bought it.

You need to change your inside filter and maybe rinse out the outer, make sure your water level is where it needs to be also.

If the filter is brand-new, I would recommend returning it to the place you bought it from, and exchange it for a new one. It is possible that the filter needs to be cleaned, but without seeing inside of it, I can't really suggest anything more.

If you haven't cleaned in in the time you've had it do that first before rushing out to replace it. Take a bowl of water from the tank and use that to clean all the filter bits your warranty says you can. Using the tank water ensures you don't kill off any good bacteria on the filter. It just might be gunked up with algae or other matter. IF this doesn't work. Return it to the store you got it from ASAP and get another back into your tank as fast as you can. Good luck!

What kind of filter is it? With the outside kind the tank water level must be kept up level with the filter. There are some filter pumps that are not very good and they tend to stop working for a number of reasons. Take it back where you got it and see what they say. Be sure you have the right size for your tank too. without knowing just what kind of filtration system you have it is hard to suggest too much. But when it comes to filters you get what you pay for. What ever you do make sure there is enough air for the fish. and get it taken care of quickly. the fish can be extremely threatened without the filter working. good luck Fish are a very pleasant pet to have around.
