Our dog makes the rounds every night, poking her nose into each bed, making sure everything's OK. But the best was when I took her to see a friend who was suffering from alzheimers and dying of cancer, recovering from a stroke, and feeling lonely and miserable. Alex, who is an enormous, puppy-like German Shepherd, knew just what to do. She walked calmly to Edith, put her head in Edith's lap, and let her stroke her ears and neck. She brought so much peace to that poor lady. I don't know how Alex knew, but she seemed to sense the situation immediately, and figured out her role precisely. It was a kindness to Edith, and a lovely memory for me.
