To prevent joint disease keep your dog at his ideal weight (to tell, look at his waist, if he's straight from ribs to hips, he's overweight Use monthly flea and heartworm preventative, feed him a quality diet of hard food. Brush his teeth daily and give him treats impregnated with chlorhexidine to prolong good oral health. Get his teeth cleaned every couple years to prevent oral decay and infection. Have him examined yearly by your regular vet, and when he turns 10, get a yearly blood health profile done to catch any liver, kidney, heart disease, and even cancers in their early stages.

You have a cross breed which means you need to check the health etc.info on both. Some things you cannot prevent just keep them comfy. What I do with my dogs is give them a little milk in their water from time to time they are older but they dont have any bone or muscle problems.I have a Mastif and a pit bull both lerge breeds. As dogs get older in human years they are 5 but dog years times this by 7 shes 35.Feed her properly and you may also give her vitamins what she doesnt get from her food supplement with a vitamin both these breeds live a long time you have alot of years left.

Feed him a well balance dry dog food (meat as #1 ingredient). Schedule annual vet exams. Cocker Spaniels are notorious for chronic ear problems. Since he is half Cocker, once a week routinely clean his ears. Purchase a cleaner through your vet's office or a recommended product by your vet or vet tech. Cetyl-M is a great daily supplement for arthritis support. Check with your vet if they carry it or check their site on the internet (use your search engine)Boston Terrier breeder for 27 yearsVet Office employee for 10 years

Make sure to go for yearly physicals which includes blood work at 10 years old twice a year, maintain and brush teeth - small breeds tend to have genetically bad teeth and infection from dental disease can lead to organ problems namely heart disease.Maintain weight and keep her active with exercise good muscles are needs to support jointsDiet plays a huge part in maintain good health and keeping the immune system strong and healthyA good quality foods , with natural ingredients(no chemicals) without a lot of grain, the body converts grains to sugar some is okay as it is used first for energy but too much raises insulin levels which can lead to diabetes and also also causes joint inflammation and paid (arthritis)Kidney problems are common problems in both breeds, high "meat" proteins diets help to prevent by improving gomerular filtration flow thru the kidneys and helps keep them from becoming clogged, foods high in "grain" proteins requires the kidneys to work harder to break down the protein from the grain and it does not have all the amino acids that found in meat so it makes the kidneys more sluggish and causes clogging. So choosing food like Canidae which is truly meat based or one of the high protein zero grains diets is a good thing to help prevent kidney disease from occuringAvoid foods that have ingredients listed like so Lamb meal, brewer’s rice, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, .... etcSure meat is list first but it is followed by 3 grains, when you add up all the grains you have more grains than meatA much better quality food(canidae) is listed like thisChicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, ...etcIt become obvious the meat content is more than the grainsI feed a grain free EVO RM Beef, Beef Meal, Lamb Meal, Potatoes, Egg, Sunflower Oil, Buffalo, Lamb, Venison, Beef Cartilage,,,,,etcwhich is mostly meat protein and very easy for a dogs body to digest even the carbs because their is very little carb, no insulin issues or inflammation as a result my 10 year just underwent xrays and has the skeletal system of a 5 year old with no arthritis in her joints, the higher meat level help to maintain muscle mass so she still can enjoy rough hours on end play with the puppy, the cartiledge provides natural chondroitin sulfate to help jointsThere has been a lot os misunderstanding and myths about proteins and the effects on dogs over the years and lot of these came about due to research done on rats 70 years ago in the last 10 years a real effort is now being done on dogs and it is tossing out all the old theories but many dog food manufacturers and even older vets have not caught up to this research, thouygh for dog food manufacturers it boils done to profits as more meat equals less profit for them so they are not as willing to changes though newer food manufacturers are watching the research and producing foods according to the research http://b-naturals.com/Nov2005.php
