I haven't wanted to post here because I lost both of my cats to coyotes a few months ago. I know that many of you are probably critical of anyone letting their cats outside, and I understand that. However, both of these cats were wild (not feral). Living in the woods it's not always possible to keep cats in who have been rescued (both were "dumped") and have spent much of their lives outside. No matter how hard you try to keep them in, they get out however they can. My oldest cat was with me for almost 20 years, and the younger one my son rescued about 7 years ago. Due to extreme drought conditions here the coyotes were coming out of the woods in the middle of the day. I didn't realize this until my neighbor saw them in her back yard at about 3:00 pm one day...same day the oldest went missing. The youngest one reverted to her wild ways (she spent her first winter outside, apparently), and just took off

She came around for a little while to eat, but every time I tried to keep her inside she found a way out, including knocking out a screen to get out. After about 2 weeks, she just disappeared.
At the moment I'm feeding a barn cat. We have an agreement....I agree to feed him, and he agrees not to come in my house. I have a sheltered porch and will fix up a box for harsh weather from a covered litter box with rugs inside. He has been around for a long time, and usually hangs out up the road in the neighbor's horse barn in the coldest part of the winter....another "wild" one. He'll meander in, but runs if you get to close to him.
At any rate, I'm not getting any more animals for a while. I have a serious disability and can no longer afford the vet's bills, and it's just too hard to lose them.
