the Betta is an anabantid, meaning that it can breath air. therefore the water quality does not have to be the best. these fish can survive and thrive in a goldfish bowl, a sprig of 'lucky' bamboo or other plants, will help to keep the water quality better. Tulips are not recommended from personal experience. plants are not necessary though. A 20% water change weekly is recommended, though two weeks will be tolerated by most Betta's. try not to overfeed, this will just make the water quality deteriorate faster. there also are sold pond-weed that can tolerate the unheated conditions of a Betta bowl.hope this helps. good luck.
