Four Expert Tips for Making Homemade Chinchilla Cages

by Pet Health on May 12, 2010

If you don't want to buy a cage, then you will need to make one yourself.  There are a few things you need to keep in mind when building homemade chinchilla cages.  You need to consider the sides, base, height, and access.  This article will give you a few tips for making a suitable cage.

Sides

One of the first things you need to think about when making a cage is the construction of its sides.  You will have to choose between mesh and solid sides.  If you choose to make solid sides, it will be hotter inside during warmer months.  Therefore, you will need to make sure your chinchilla doesn't suffer a heat stroke.  Mesh sides provide much more ventilation.

Base

You will also need to consider the base when making homemade chinchilla cages.  Once again you will have to choose between solid and mesh.  If you choose a solid base, then make sure you construct a pull-out litter tray to make it easier to clean.  Also, you should think about putting caster wheels on the bottom of the cage if you may have to move it around often.

Height

The height of the cage is also important.  Chinchillas love to jump around.  Therefore, it's best to construct a cage that's taller than it is wide.  However, you shouldn't make the cage taller than three feet.  If you do, your chinny may injury himself if he falls from the top of the cage.

Access

One of the final things to consider when making homemade chinchilla cages is access.  It should go without saying that you'll want to construct side access.  However, you may also want to make an opening in the top of the cage.  This will give you access to clean it better.
