Four Expert Tips for Buying Chinchilla Cages

by Pet Health on June 6, 2010

You will certainly need to keep your chin in a cage.  There are a few things you need to consider when buying chinchilla cages.  Some of these things include size, toys, and material.  This article will give you a few tips.

Size

One of the most important things to consider when looking for a cage is its size.  Chinchillas love to jump around and climb.  Therefore, it's best that you look for a cage that's taller than it is wide.  Cages designed to hold ferrets or parrots are suitable.  You may want to get a multi-story cage to accommodate your chin's desire to climb.

Material

When buying chinchilla cages, you also need to think about the type of material that they're made from.  You will have to choose between a plastic or metal design.  Metal cages are quite easy to clean.  Plastic cages aren't suitable because chins love to chew on it.  The porous plastic is also more difficult to clean and can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Floor

One of the next things to consider is the type of floor the cage has.  Some cages are designed to be situated on top of a pan, while others have a solid floor.  Whichever you choose, you should look for one that has a removable floor.  This will allow you to change the litter easily.  If you think you'll have to move the cage frequently, look for one that has wheels on the bottom to allow for easier transport.

Toys

Chinchillas love to play with toys.  So, look for a cage that has ramps, ladders, or tubes that your chin can use.  One that already comes equipped with a proper exercise wheel is also a good option.  Chins like to chew also, so wooden hanging toys made from birch, willow, or apple are useful.
