So, you’ve got yourself a male and female chinchilla and want them to mate. Well, there are a few things you need to know about breeding chinchillas. This article will give you a few tips.
Introduction
You shouldn’t just buy two chins and throw them in the same cage together. It’s best to keep them separate and introduce the two gradually. You can let them out of their cages so that they can play and run around together. You need to keep an eye on them though as one may be aggressive towards the other. If they get along fine, then it’s safe to put them together in one cage. Just make sure that it’s big enough to house them.
Genetics
Genetics play a large role when breeding chinchillas. You don’t want to use a male or female that has had health problems in the past. These health issues could have been passed genetically. If you breed the animal, it will likely pass it on to the kits. Therefore, try to verify the male and female’s medical history and genetics before you breed them.
Pregnancy
Once the two have mated, the male will leave a waxy plug inside the female. This is the primary indicator that the two have successfully mated. However, this doesn’t mean that the female is pregnant. The gestation period lasts slightly longer than three months.
Bathing
When breeding chinchillas, it’s important that you don’t allow the female to bathe one week before birth and one week afterwards. If she has a dust bath, she will be prone to an infection. Also, the dust can cling to her teats which may cause problems for her kits.
