How Many People in the US Own Large Reptiles as Pets?

by Pet Health on March 17, 2010

Seriously, from any mindful, methodical calculation you might have, how many large reptile owners are there in the US? Given the US is around 350m last time I heard.

I'm speaking primarily of snakes, but any other tree inhabiting reptiles could/should be included in your thoughts. In narrowing it down though, say, try to exclude turtles.

Thanks a bunch.

Probably anywhere from 1% to 5% is all.
What is considered large, is a bearded dragon large? I have one of those. I also own boas, pythons, monitors, and crocodillians. I have others as well, but I doubt they’d be considered large.

Not sure, but I think reptiles are more popular than some people think. I think more people keep smaller reptiles just because not everyone has the space and the time to give the attention that larger reptiles require. I personally wouldn’t consider bearded dragons as large reptiles I keep them also but I would consider the Green Iguana I keep to be a large species of reptile as these can grow up to 6ft
