What Fish Can I Have in a 20 Gallon Tank?

by Pet Health on July 14, 2010

I just got a freshwater tank, I wanted to see what kinds of fish will do well in there. I want to have a semi aggressive tank. What fish are really unique and would fit in a 20 gallon? Also are there and bottom feeder fish that don't get too big? Thanks!

Clown loaches are too big for 20 gal.

There are some funny looking catfish, like glass catfish, not sure which would be suitable for 20 gal?

as regards to bottom feeders i would recommend not getting a plec as the can grow um to 2ft usually 1ft in aquariums (i should know) clown loaches are much better also great to watch and do well in groups of 2-6 but also after time they may get large but 20 gal should be good for them there are many bottom feeders mainly loaches would be good but try to only have one species of loach in one tank. also you could get a red fin shark (rainbow shark) or red tail shark but only one as they are territorial fish and do not do well with others of the same species. tetras are great for middle feeders neon’s and cardinals give great colour and effect when kept in groups of 6 or more and then you could also have some live bearers like mollies platties guppy’s and sword tails all of which get on and have many variations

Liveaquaria.com has info on minimum tank size (in gallons) for many different fish and they have a compatibility chart to see which fish get along.
