Do Weiner Dogs and Labs Make Good Friends? Would They Enjoy Hanging Out While Home Alone?

by Pet Health on March 26, 2010

We already have a one year old chocolate labrador who loves going to the dog park and swimming at the lake. However, we were looking for a friend for our lab to have while we're away at work, and hopefully for her to play with as well. The dog we've had in mind is a weiner dog, because they're adorable. So, my question is, how well would weiner dogs and labradors get along and would they play together?

Labs are everybodies friend no matter who or what it is . I have 4 labs, one chicuacua, one jack russell, and a mountain fiest mix, they are all good buddies and have great pack dynamics,
I think they will love each other once the butt sniffing is over.:) LOL

We have both and although they get along fine, they don’t play together. Labs are much bigger than a dachshund and have much energy and many dachshunds just can’t keep up because of heir short legs. You didn’t say if you were thinking of a mini-dachshund or a standard because a standard might be a better choice if you really want a dachshund.

Labs are pretty genial to everybody, unless they feel threatened. Most wiener dogs Ive know have been pretty freindly, too Sometimes you can find a grumpy one tho… they would probably play after awhile.
labs and cats even get along, so most other dogs would be ok, I guess.

is your lab an older dog? or is it a puppy ?
your lab should still be a puppy( under 10 months old) other wise you might risk injury to the dachshund.(weiner dog)
these dogs are really little when puppies and imagine what a 50lbs puppy can do to a puppy that is at max 5lbs
take care and use commonn sense then everything should be fine
good luck

I have both and they are the best of friends. I have a mini-dachshund, their is obviously a size difference, but the mini can hold his own when playing, he even pins the lab down… but she lets him. They are pretty cute together actually. You do have to keep an extra eye on them, my two like to play rough, and the mini has gotten hurt. But for the most part since he is smaller, he can run right under her, and escape…. They also let each other know when they are playing to rough… every once in a while you’ll hear a yelp and that will be the end of it. If your lab gets along with smaller dogs then go for it. I really lucked out and have to great dogs.

Labs will get along with almost anything the only problem with daschounds (wiener dogs) is that they are very prone to back injuries and if your lab “accidently” ever plays too rough which they are known to do then it could cause a fast back injury that could result in your dog being paralyzed or getting major surgery!!! I own 2 black labs and a chihuahua but chihuahuas are more sturdy!
